Why do some DVDs play on my PC and others don't?

I am using PowerDVD 7. DVD/CD player is a Lite-On.

For instance, my wife gave me a NY Giants DVD from the NFL Network for
Christmas. The first DVD just spins on my PC, the second plays. The
first will play downstairs on our cheapie Panasonic DVD player. Same
goes for some of my other purchased DVDs. Some of these 4 pack DVDs
will play on my PC but others of the same batch won't.

I finally resorted to purchasing AnyDVD and CloneDVD to see if that
would help but if my PC won't recognize the DVD then I guess I wasted
my money. I've tried trying to see if my computer would recognize
them under Windows Explorer and My Computer.

Any ideas?

All liteonit drives have firmware updates from liteonit.com Try updating the
drive.

I would if I could but I can't so I won't :) I will give their
website another try. Getting a Database error: cannot connect to
Database Can't connect to MySQL server on '202.145.180.11' (10061)
MySQL Error
Session halted.

Thanks!

If your using all three DVD manipulation/burning apps you may have an
"exclusive lock" issue with these installed, not to mention any other apps
that want to use the optical drives, media players, itunes, etc.. All want
their exclusive access, some more than others, some won't let go without a
fight, consider Windows the referee, everybody blames the ref.. Some apps add
software drivers in with the generic XP cdrom drivers, to commandeer the
drive, usually but not always unsigned by MS.

Thank you very much. I am going to give it a try!

The above link will help to get rid of the extra drivers these apps add,
your call..

If you need to you can reinstall your favorite app out of the three, learn
to use it and update it, install sanctioned addins for it if necessary, just
be aware that these annoyances are bound to reappear on occasion, especially
if you reload all the apps again..

Thankyou. I will try that!!

DVDs are encoded to play only on certain DVD according to the region code -
some may play all regions. Have a look at the DVDs. If they're designed
for different regions and your DVD drive isn't that's probably the cause of
the problem.

I forgot about that. I don't see anything relevant on my DVDs though.
My Lite-On DVDRW is set to Region 1 (as it should be).

Thanks!

It doesn't matter what region you are in, what region the DVD is
manufactured for or what region the DVD player is manufactured for. What
does matter is that you have a DVD player capable of playing a particular
DVD.

If you have a DVD player that can play a DVD from any region (?is that
possible) then either the DVD player or the DVD is faulty.

Similarly if you have a DVD player that can play a DVD manufactured for a
particular region (usually stated on the label) either the DVD player or the
DVD is faulty.
