Why can't I get cd disc's to work?

I installed xp pro (from win 98se) but when putting in a disc (files or audio) to the CDRW or DVDRW the PC can not read any information. when trying to open the disc the PC asks 'Please insert disc into drive D (or E)' but the disc is in. (prior to putting xp on I replaced the CDrom with DVDRW)
I have tried the Microsoft support with problems to CD rom/cdrw etc (thanks Thorston) but these did not help.

I also took off nortons AV 2002 thinking this might be conflicting, but this made no difference. (I will be putting NAV 2004 on next but obviously can't yet because pc won't read the disk!)

I did a system restore (some dates worked - others didn't?) but this did not help.

I now thinking of uninstalling xp and going back to win98se to see if this helps and if it does then put xp Home on rather than pro.

But before I do this I'm wondering if there are any other thoughts/suggestions by you guru's out there.

I'm getting pressure from my better half (my wife) so I need to look good-if you know what I mean.

Thanks
Geoff

XP-Home is a stripped down version of Pro. However, if you do go back to W98
then before you upgrade again to Pro, and assuming your CD is working with
98 (!) then obtain this 30+meg program and run it to see what kind of
problems the upgrade might have BEFORE you do the update ... towards bottom
of page
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/home/upgrading/advisor.mspx
You might need to get some compatible drivers and/or program updates before
you upgrade to XP-anything and this utility will tell you all about it. MS
really ought to put this recommendation prominently on the box to keep from
annoying people (who don't forget nor forgive if something better eventually
comes along), IMHO.

Meanwhile, before you ditch and go back to 98 ...
Go into device manager, do you see the CD Drives listed there? If so, go to
each of their driver tabs and uninstall (uninstall, not disable) them. Do
not reboot.
Now (and regardless of the last thing, above) go to Control Panel and use
the Detect New Hardware. It should detect 2 CD Drives for you.
[If not then unplug the flat cable from the CD-R/W, you might have it
jumpered wrong, and reboot - see if the other CD Drive now exists in XP and
if not then start over at the above "meanwhile" part.]

If at this point (and maybe it won't happen) it says it can not find a file
then there are a few places you can try to browse to in each such case:
C:\Windows\
C:\Windows\System32
C:\Windows\System32\Drivers
and it might find what it needs there without you having to insert the XP
CD.

Then reboot. That *should* get XP to recognize the CD drives again, but
maybe only as CD-R and not necessarily as CD-R/W (although it might) and so
you'll have to install the *XP* version of the CD-Writer software (get it
from the manufacture on the internet if necessary) before that will work ---
the 98 driver might munge things up. Usually, a Windows 2000 driver will
also work if you can not find one for XP.

Best wishes. I hope this makes you look good to The Boss. <grin>
