Why can I not use inline text in emails?

Even though I've followed the simple instructions to set up inline text
within emails, my comments within the email I'm replying to do not appear as
inline text. Any ideas what's wrong?

The first time I set it up, it worked fine.

I'm using Outlook 2003 SP1 as part of Office Professional 2003.

How do they appear? Is the message format the same each time? The feature
works differently between HTML and plain text.

Diane,

Your question solved the problem for me. I didn't see it mentioned anywhere
that the message format mattered. I changed to rich text, and hey presto!
Thanks.

By the way, does this mean the email reader will only notice my comments if
they are in rich text format as well?
