Why: Asks username & Password in Network

Hi there,

Setup:
2 Machines (One PC & One Laptop), both XP Prof SP2 and latest updates
connected to a D-Link Wireless router.

1. Both machines have Internet Access
2. My PC sees and can get onto my LapTop's shared folder.
3. My Laptop sees but cannot get access to my PC - everytimeit asks for
a username & password which I do not have.

Thanx again for your help.

What am I doing wrong. I have tried to setup the connection with the
wireless connection wizard, but somehow got steps wrong with the in and
out of the flash card.

What I did next was to do a normal network setup and told each computer
that it connects to the Internet through another device.

Does anyone out there have any idea why my Laptop asks for a username
and password and my PC not. I have no username & password setup on both
machines.

I hope my explanation explains everything you need to know.

Regards
Deon

I have 7 machines setup in my house and my username & pass is assigned
to each machine in the user section as an admin.....My master machine
has only me assigned so everyone in the network has to know a password &
user to access all shared drives..........Hence, and my point, if you
have a user/pass identical on each machine it will not
ask...........Providing of course you are logged in as that identical
user..........
Confused? ;0)

Hi there,

I sort of follow what you say, but what I don't understand, is that I have
access from my PC to Laptop but not the other way around.

What's even more confusing, is that at our offices all the computers belong
to the same network, OFFICE, and they see each other perfectly with their
Shared Documents folder accessabe to everyone.

Why can I not have the same here?

What do the permissions look like on your PC? Is "allow" checked off? Do
you actually have sharing enabled in the properties of your local are
connection for the NIC?

Check your permissions for each machine and match/compare them from your
LTop to PC....

Just a thought...........

Hi there,

I sort of follow what you say, but what I don't understand, is that I have

Both computers MUST have identical user account/passwords for this to
work seamlessly on your peer-to-peer home network. One machine or the
other is missing this vital component.
What's even more confusing, is that at our offices all the computers belong
to the same network, OFFICE, and they see each other perfectly with their
Shared Documents folder accessabe to everyone.

Most offices use the Domain (client/server) model of networking, where
a Server known as the Domain Controller authenticates all access
requests. All user ID information is kept on the Server, making this
feasible.
Why can I not have the same here?

Because you are running peer-to-peer, NOT a Domain (client/server).
