Who is using a LCD monitor?

T

Todd Howard

I am in the market to get a 19" LCD....I currently have a 9500 Pro w/DVI, so
I would like to get one that has DVI capabilities. I know about them not
being the best platform for games, so I am willing to live with a little
ghosting. I have searched the net for about a week now and I think I have
gotten down to 2 brands.. Samsung 191T (kinda pricey) or something from
LG....
This week is when I go what I can "visually" shopping....actually looking at
the monitors up close and hopefully demoing some games on them...

I will be using it for DVD's, TV (once I get a TV card), internet, and
gaming....
Basically if anyone out here has had any experience with 19" or bigger LCD's
any input is appreciated.
Thanks
Todd

I have a Samsung 191t hanging off the DVI port of my 9700 Pro -- a very sweet
combination. Last I looked, the 191t is only $598 on newegg.com with free
shipping! Is that pricey?

There is some ghosting only when the BIOS screen rapidly updates the memory
addresses in black & white as it does a quick PORT. Playing Unreal in 32 bit
color, I detect no ghosting. I believe it's there, but I honestly don't
notice any.

I wanted 12080x1024 resolution and anything smaller than 19" had the type too
small for my preference.

BTW, be sure to enable "ClearType" font smoothing if you're using WinXP.

The cheapest I could find it here in Canada was something $945 CAN...at
NCIX.com Yes that is a little pricey....locally it can be found for about
$1100 CAN....
Ouch...
Thanks for the opinions though guys, I may just bite the bullet on it...

I'm using this same Samsung 191t monitor and have absolutely no problems
with it at all. I have it hooked to a 9500-pro card, which seems to be a
good combination for me.

Only one warning on your display card.

My 9700 np (mod to 9700 Pro with core/mem OC to 330/290Mhz)was just adequate
for my 17" LCD running at native resolution 1280x1024 on 3D games! My system
is an AMD 2500+XP OC @200x11 MHz with 1G DDR400.

For an 1600x1200 19" LCD, your 9500 Pro will likely to fail you on 3D gaming
or you can accept the blur looking of 1024x768 to 1600x1200 translation!

Unless you are lucky enough to modify your 9500 Pro to 9700 Pro and OC it a
bit, otherwise, you may want to consider a 1280x1024 19" LCD rather than the
1600x1200 one.

Havent seen too many LCD's @ 19" that go to 1600X1200....I have been running
mine for most games at 1280X1024, with little or no slowdown...

Hi Todd,
The 191T is an excellent choice. After extensive research that was my
choice until I blundered on a 20" Formac display on sale for $1K about 6
months ago. The Formac 17" is available at $499 but I can't recommend it
because there is a compatibility issue with some PCs. Go to www.formac.com
to check it out. My Formac looks as good as the Apple Cinema display.

Oops Todd - that $499 Formac is a 17" display. The 19" is $799. Another
senior moment <sigh>.

Sorry, in my mind's eye, I see 19"LCD = 20"or 21"LCD = 1600x1200 resolution!
Because I am also considering a larger LCD but with resolution 1600x1200.

Of course, with a Radeon 9700, you do turn on all the bells and whistles
like 4xFSAA & 16xAF, do you?

By the way, take a look in Tom's Hardware Guide, they just have something
you may be interested.

I am in the market to get a 19" LCD....
I purchased a Viewsonic VX900-2 from Amazon for $698.USD free shipping
and I am quite happy with it. I've only had a chance to test it with
Simcity4, Galactic Civilizations and Railroad Tycoon Platinum but I
haven't seen any ghosting while scrolling huge maps.

Ed,

Have you run RealFlight G2 on the 191 T? I'm seriously considering it for my
new home built monster computer.

Best regards,

You guys are determined to make me spend $1000 on a monitor arent you? :)
TH

I've seen them on sale for less than $600. So now you can spend the other
$400 on a new video card. :)

Turns out that I can get the 191T at work ( I work in IT for the Canadian
Military) for about $916 CAN, looks like I am going to go that route...
Thanks a lot for the opinions guys, MUCH appreciated....

One more thing....to the guys who own the 191T...did it come with a digital
cable?

I got the Viewsonic VX900 19 incher. There were many reasons but one was that
it comes with a DVI cable included (a US$70 item) whereas other 19's did not.
Lovely DVI display on my ATI AIW Radeon 7500. US$700 net at Best Buy.

Yes, the 191T comes with the DVI cable as well an the analog. Word to the
wise, don't attempt to hook up both cables to the same video card. You can
however run two different monitors.

Also, you may want to look at the Dell 1901FT. It's the Samsung 191T with a
Dell stamp on it and it might be cheaper. Or, not.

T

Thanks again guys....I did look at the Dell and with my contact it is
actually higher than the 191T...
Thanks...

I have an 18" gateway lcd. It looks way the hell better than the 19"
crt I used to have, especially for gaming. I know most lcd screens
aren't the best but I'm really happy with mine, almost no washout or
ghosting, everything is crisp and clear, no glare on the screen and
nice and flat. Nothing to complain about. And I use DVI with it also.
