Who is responsible for installing anti virus software.

I was pointing out that this discussion may be solved a bit easier if
Richard the OP would tell us (if he ever comes back) exactly what
computers are involved here, and where the virus was actually found.

Don't you think?

I think, which proves that I exist, ;) and IMO, that wouldn't make it easier,
nor more difficult. It simply doesn't matter.

Good Yom Tov to you as well Zvi !

How were the kneidlach at your seder? ;)
I just think that if he was to setup the server, OS and applications, then AV software would
also be required. To not do so would border on malptractice.

I disagree here. I have seen many installations where AV software is forbidden
for its unpredictable behavior, like life support and critical systems.
Besides, the OP made it quite clear that he wasn't the one to setup the server.

Sounds to me as if the two are completely unrelated. Richard put a web
site on a web host for the client. Then, the client's office PC got
the worm, by opening an infected email and executing the attachment.

The only connection that I can imagine is, that the web site contained
a "mailto:" link that wasn't munged, and a visitor infected with netsky
had this site in his cache (TIF), so Netsky could read it and send an
infected mail there.

But still Richard can not be blamed for designing the web site like
this. The recipient of the worm was the one who *ran* it. Without user
interaction, the infection would not have happened.

And munging email addresses on websites is no good idea; the visually
impaired cannot read gif pictures, and a replacement of an at sign with
a hex64 or whatever it is, wouldn't help much; modern worms can extract
this just as well, in the same way, as address harvesters do it
already. A mailto is no cause for the infection per se, no matter what
the web site owner is claiming to avoid being responsible himself.

I don't like kneidlach. Just the soup and veggies.

It must be real tough on the Orthodox to deal with Shabbos and Pesach together. I
understand there have only been less than a dozen times in the last century where the 1st
nite of Pesach was on Shabbos. My brother probably held his sedor till 3~4am this morning !

BTW: Are you Ashkenazie or Sephardic ? I'm Ashkenazie.

what an overwhelming response from you all. thank you.

just a few points to clarify.

1) I designed the website using standard html and a mailto: script to make
email links.

2) this was hosted on a server under my control (and paid for by me)

3) the client had no Anti virus software on an old laptop (unbeknown to me)

4) the virus was (allegedly) on his laptop using an existing dialup account

i hope this helps answer a few points for all

Pity, because kneidlach can make a great generic AV, when thrown at the virus'
eye. ;-)

I am from ashkenazie roots (parents were from Czechoslovakia & Hungary and I was
born in Belgium) and changed my name to Zvi Netiv after immigrating from post
war Europe. My wife is sephardic (Bulgaria) and the kneidlach are from my
heritage.

On the sephardic side, my in laws passed to me their secrets on Jewish-Balkanian
cooking, of which I became a specialist. ;)

Who is responsible for installing anti virus software.
Depends

I am a website designer and have a client how I have designed a site for who
has a virus named NETSKY. They inform me it is my fault and I should have
installed anti virus software on my clients PC.

What was in the job spec?

So, if he's trying to get out of paying you with this lame
excuse, you can take his website away? Excellent!
