Anti Virus software.

Hi,

I know this is a strange question. My client wants a kiosk app
developing. I would like to use XP Embedded as the OS, on a touch
screen device with no hard disk, i.e. using solid state flash memory.
My client has a company policy of using Norton Anti Virus for all
networked computers.

He feels that this device needs some anti virus protection.

Does anyone on this list feel that this is necessary for this type of
application? If so, do Norton do a version of Anti virus software for
XP Embedded?

Help appreciated.

Regards

I am pretty sure it will be possible to get Norton Antivirus solution running on your XPe image. Just matter of components included.
However, the image will likely be quite big since Norton is a heavy application.

There were other antivirus solutions ported to XPe. E.g., eTrust from CA: http://ca.com/us/partners/content.aspx?cid=75004

Also EWF in general could be soft of antivirus protection for your devices. Please read (with your customer) this page:

Hi, After some conversations with Norton/Symantec, they say that
Norton Antivirus will not run on XP Embedded.
Unless anyone has anecdotal evidence otherwise, I am minded to agree
with them.

Just wondering. Were there any explanations provided with the response from Symantec?
Any technical reasons or legal preventing the product port on XPe?

I have successfully installed Norton Anti-Virus on XPe and it works.
However, the only XPe approved anti-virus is from Computer Associates. (CA)

The same here. I have successfully tried NA on XPProEmulation image a while ago. This is why I am asking if there were any
explanation provided by the Semantic.

I had a customer who wanted to use McAfee. It will run on XPe, but the issue
is that there are some registry keys that need to be preserved between
boots. This is were the registry fitler has to come in. I would suspect that
NA would have the same issues.

Yes with Norton if you have a write filter whether it be disk or RAM you
have to save the changes manually

My customer went with FBWF to open a hole for the virus definition updates,
but still had issues with the registry.

Hi, thanks for all the replies so far.
I think that Norton/Symantec rep told me the 'official' line on
support for NA in XPe. If you guys have it up and running in XPe then
that proves that the thing works.
The main problem will be in what manual intervention will be needed to
update the anti virus definitions. It sounds like the FBWF alterations
to get the virus definitions updates to work will be a sticking point.
My customer will listen to me when I say that NA will work on XPe, but
if it is not officially supported by Smantec then they will probably
take the view that it isn't something that they should be doing.
I am probably going to have a had time getting my customer to agree to
this. Believe it or not, they are more likely to agree to having no
Anti Virus protection than having an un-supported AV product.

Thanks for the inputs guys - much appreciated.
