White spaces in Add/Remove Programs

G

GRL

My problem is that there are many white spaces between two groups of
programs in "Add/Remove Programs". I've found some solutions to this
problem, and I followed them: I've cleaned the registry using many registry
cleaners, I've reset all the negative values found in the registry keys
"DisplayIcon" and "DefaultIcon", but everything was unuseless, because the
problem remains. Besides, the last action (resetting all the negative values
in the registry key "DefaultIcon") caused the disappearing of some icons in
the start menu (the one of Control Panel, for example) and in Explorer (the
one associated with .txt files, for example). So, now I've got two problems,
instead solving one of them.
Can someone help me?
Thanks.

Add or Remove - White Space
This is generally due to the DisplayIcon having a negative number. From here you can
either remove the negative number or remove the last application listed:
Start/Run/Regedit:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\{}

Note you can save the registry key first by:
On the File menu, click Export.
In the File name box, type SaveKey, and then click Save.
Or create a system restore point prior to editing.

You weren't supposed to change every negative icon in the registry. Your
target icon setting to be altered was the last program listed before the
white space began.

OK! The white spaces disappeared removing the last program before the spaces
in Add/Remove. But before I zeroed all the negative values of DefaultIcon in
the registry. I know, I was stupid, but now, as I said, some icons in the
start menu and in explorer lack. Can you help me?
Thank you.

1. Glad you have the white space removed. Which program was it?
2. Never use Registry Cleaners.
3. Start/Run/Regedit and navigate to:

HKEY LOCAL MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\
<Program name>

In the right-pane, create a new REG SZ (String) value named
'DisplayIcon' and assign it's value to the full path where the program's
exe file resides. [example: C:\Program Files\AIM95\aim.exe]

Also:

Go to Start/Run and type in: regsvr32 /i mshtml.dll
Go to Start/Run and type in: regsvr32 appwiz.cpl
Go to Start/Run and type in: regsvr32 /i shell32

Thank you again.
1: I don't remember the exact name of the removed program (it was an almost
never used program), something like "media recorder";
2/3: my problem is the disappearance of the icons of control panel,
documents, etc. in the start menu.

Most welcome and no problem. As per your current issue, this would need to
be handled manually.

If you have the chance: to wherever you gained your previous info, please
post that this is not the proper way of dealing with it. That asked, which
exact icons are missing?

Thank you for the third time, I have to say.
With my very stupid zeroing of all the DefaultIcon values, I caused a real
damage.
Anyway, I found a free program ("Activicon") which let me restore the icons.
