Where's the clean C:\?

K

Khaliphorneyah

Whenever I start my Command Prompt, it opens with
different paths or folders showing, instead of the
venerable, straight C:\.

I see things like this---C:\Windows\Fonts or C:\documents
and settings\douglas, etc.

How do I get the clean C:\ or does it matter?
TIA

Open the Command Prompt and type: CD \ , and hit enter.

Hi, Khaliphorneyah.

Right-click on Command Prompt (or whichever shortcut icon you use to start
it) and click Properties. In the Command Prompt Properties window, put
whatever you want into Start in. Mine has %HomeDrive%\, so my "DOS" window
always opens at D:\, because D: is my Boot Volume. (in the "DOS" window,
type Set for a list of all the current environment variables for your
computer.)

That Properties window has several tabs where you can set other things, like
colors, fonts, screen size, etc. Remember the old PIF files that we used
long ago for this sort of settings? The details of the Properties window
vary depending on whether we are clicking on a shortcut or some other way of
starting Cmd.exe. For instance, if the "DOS" window is less than
full-screen, right-click on the Title Bar and click Properties; this brings
up a Properties window has fewer tabs than the other Properties window.

Thanks, Carey, that's the ticket! That put me where I am
comfortable in command prompt.
Why did it/does it open showing other paths or folders in
the first place? TIA, again.

Why? Because your command prompt properties (right click the icon) Start
In: box has it set that way. Most likely %HOMEDRIVE%%HOMEPATH%Change this
to what/where ever you would like
