Where is the Login User Name stored?

I posted this in the Basics and did not get any help.

I have a couple of XP Pro and Home systems in a Dr's office that I have
deleted the prior user names from the systems and have added new user names.
The problem is that when the screen saver is activated with password
protection on the old deleted user names re-appear in the login screen when
you come back to the system after the screen saver has been activated. Where
is that user name stored so I can clear it out and reset with the new user
name? I have searched the registry and replaced the old name with the new
name but it still re-appears. These nurses are going to beat me if I can not
fix it.

How did you delete the old user names? You just cannot delete the names
from the registry or rename the folders.

Did you use Control Panel | User Accounts?
If not, then you need to put everything back, and use User Accounts to
delete the accounts, and then add the new accounts.

The reason that the old accounts are appearing is because there are entries
in each of the user's 'ntuser.dat' file (that you are not loading), which
reference the old names.

The entries that control part of this are in HLKM\Software\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList.

Can't do that.

Try renaming the new back to the old. Use User Accounts to delete the
accounts (but keep the files and folders if you need them). You can always
copy the folders off so that you can add files to the eventually new
accounts.

You need to make sure that the accounts in the registry point to the correct
areas.

1. Back up the registry.
2. Open HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList and find each of the SIDS associated with the
paths of the old folders, e.g.,

S-1-5-21-1390067357-1606980848-1060284298-1003

3. Check the ProfileImagePath and make sure the names reflect the old names
for each account you wish to delete.
4. Using User Accounts, delete the account(s), saving files and folders
when prompted (if desired).
5. Now add the new Accounts.
6. Login each account, in order for the account to be created.

You can now copy files/folders from the saved old accounts to the new
accounts if needed.
Then it is safe to delete the old account folders (C:\Documents and
Settings\[OLD USERNAME]\....
