where does XP look for drivers?

I have a Code 10 problem with a LAN driver. If I uninstall
and reboot, XP spots the h/ware, finds and loads a driver
and the error is cleared. On reboot however, the error
returns.
I downloaded the latest driver from giga-byte and saved it
to the D: partition on my hard drive where I keep Data and
downloads. However pointing XP's Update Driver there has
no effect - XP isn't interested and says keep the
original. How do I force XP to use this latest one? When
there's no driver installed, does it look everywhere for
the latest date-stamped drivers, including all partitions
on the HD, or just stop when it finds a matching one, in
this case on the C: drive I guess, where the original one
will have been installed?

Go to control panel>system>hardware>driver signing and see which option
is selected. Try to update drivers again and carefully look for options
to use the drivers you want.

Done it at last. No thanks to Gigabyte's useless
driver "update" site - huge dowloads containing mostly
irrelevant files, installation interface that doesn't work
and old drivers!
Went to Marvell's site and found the crucial little .zip
file that did the business with Update Driver...etc.
I'm grateful for the support here and from MediaMan in
Short-Media forums.
