Where do the Windows update files go while awaiting install?

XP Home SP3,
(Windows Update not MSUpdate)

(I posted similar in the windows update group but I don't see many familiar
names there and it looks a bit quiet...)

This hasn't occurred to me before, but I don't know where downloaded Windows
Updates go before they are installed, or how to start them off manually
without the prompt.

Usually the prompt is a minor irritant, but today a lot of updates came
down, and when I selected 'custom' to get a proper look, the 'next' button
sent it into install instead. So I 'cancelled', and now the prompt has gone
and I don't know where the update files are. I expect it will prompt again
on a restart, but I would like to know where these files are, so that I can
start them when I like.

Cheers,

I am not sure where they are when awaiting to be installed but you can
always go to the Windows Update site to check them out.

Thanks Dominique, but as I said, I expect the updates will install next time
I restart. I just wondered where they had gone in the meantime.

They're stored in randomly named subfolders of
WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download

You could open the randomly named subfolders created on the date they
were downloaded, open their update subfolder, and run update.exe of each
one to install the updates.Or, just go back to Windows Update and
install them from there.

What you're seeing is probably related to the regulation of the updates.
You can check the WindowsUpdate.log, located in WINDOWS, to see if there
are any entries similar to this one. The most recent entries are towards
the bottom of the log -

2010-10-12 11:41:13:046 1308 9e8 DnldMgr Regulation:
{7971F918-A847-4430-9279-4A52D1EFE18D} - Update
FF20EB09-05D5-42A9-A007-11CC4E70885C is "Priority" regulated and can NOT
download. Sequence 8071 vs AcceptRate 2525.

Be careful if you go back to MU/WU because the update icon will most
likely pop up.
Do *not* click the update icon if you choose to install them from WU/MU.
OR, just close Internet Explorer and allow AU to install them.

Do *not* use both updating means. Choose one or the other as the system
will likely become, for lack of a better term, confused.

Thank you Mow,

That is very informative. I see there is quite a lot in that location for
today. I tried the first just for the experience, but I see why automatic
is preferable!

Cheers,

S

I'll start up without the internet connection next time to make sure.
