When is Windows Vista actually going to work?

I've got 2 that won't run. Silent Hunter 3 and Lock On Flaming Cliffs.
Both work fine if you get the no cd patchs from gamecopyworld
it's the starforce copy protection that doesn't work with Vista

Same as the original post. I bought a new computer powerful enough to run
some of the more recent games (3G P4, 1G RAM, 256M video). Unfortunately,
the computer came with Vista. Vista is a RAM hog and it's harder to navigate
than XP.
I would GLADLY swap Vista for XP! My PC would perform like I expected and
the few games that I am trying to play would actually run. Unfortunately,
Bill G. and company wouldn't support my request to let me UPgrade to XP. The
closest they came to support was to tell me to talk to the manufacturer.
Thanks for nothing! No help from EMachines... unless I want to give them
$200 for XP.
What games? Heroes of MM V; runs so slow it is unplayable. Tried running
with compatability set to XP; no improvement. Quake 4; runs OK until I try
to DLoad previous missions = CRASH!
To you posters that don't understand why I would expect Windows based games
to run on Vista, lets just say, "You're not being very helpful".

Dude she took the PC to the Geek Squad for help. Nuff said.

Since I would never take my PC to the "Geek Squad" for help, I don't quite
understand your "Nuff said".

Are they known for being extremely horrible "technicians"? They must be, if
they failed to check on the HP site for Vista-compatible updates..

I don't think anyone believes that games won't run on Vista, maybe that
you're system specs are too low. Games like Quake4 and I'm guessing Heros
probably need at least 1GB under Windows XP, so you can add another 512-1GB
to run the same under Vista.

Are you oppose to buying another 1GB of ram ? There are plenty of games now,
FEAR BF2142 that even under XP, really need 2GB of ram.

You didn't mention which video card you have and what video drivers are have
tried with it

Finally, you can stop by the vista.games group and post any problems you
have, and a fellar recently opened a forum\website called
www.vistareadygames.com to discuss the different games under Vista. I know
someone has posted Quake4 there, so maybe you can get them to compare
hardware and such to figure out where the problems is.

Question: what are your scores in your Windows experience index of that
new computer? not just the overall. your saying it is new and I have
been to walmart and seen the scores of some of those bargain priced PC's
And I have to say that you still get what you pay for .Meaning not all
P4, 3g 1 gig ram , 256meg video are created equal.

I don't trust anybody at BB. I've never talked to anyone there that
knew anything about computers. I think the geek squads main job is to
give you crap information and sell you new stuff.

Proc = 4.2, RAM = 4.5, Graph = 3.0, Gaming Gra = 3.1, HD = 5.3. Started out
with an ATI (on Mboard) Xpress200 128M shared memory. It was sucking up RAM
usage that Vista was trying to hog. Disabled ATI and replaced with GeForce
7300GS
PCI-Express 256M. Quake4 on lowest settings still lags when things get
exciting.

Ram is there to use, not admire. Better it uses lots of ram than lots of
page filing and running the hard drive crazy. I am delighted that Vista
uses most of my 2GB of ram. Things run much faster that way.

Actually, I have the same problem, but I do not run games. I am doing
graphic design and everything in Vista is slower than my XP, with almost
twice the RAM. I absolutely HATE it, but like Colin, have no recourse other
than spending an extra $300 for XP Pro. This is the biggest joke Mr. Gates
has put out and I am extremely disappointed.

My screen locks up multiple times a day and I have had to re-install the
video drivers twice. I have called tech support over a dozen times with
problems I could not solve and I have only had the computer for less than a
month. My screen saver won't run without locking up the computer and the
list could go on.

From the above it sounds like you have an inadequate video card for
your system needs.
An upgraded video card is less expensive and a whole lot less of hassle
to install vs downgrading to XP.

Frank,
If I have a brand new computer, why wouldn't it come with an adequate video
card? This was not a cheap model. The current card I have is NVIDIA GeForce
Go 6150.

I agree on the hassle of installing a new OE. BUT, with all the problems I
am encoutering with Vista, it is a hassle everyday. Just to open programs I
have had for years, I get the stupid message that an inidentified program is
trying to access my computer and may be harmful. My icons have security
shields on them and I get tired of the stupid messages that pop up telling
me I may be compromising my security. I am set as administrator, I have gone
in and set each program to run as administrator, but the stuff doesn't go
away.

Anyway, I don't want to complain too much. I know they (MS) are trying to
make their system more secure fo the user, but I think they have gone to the
extreme on many things, making it an annoyance for the user instead.

Just my .02. :)

Nivida have just now released updated drivers for their cards. Nivida
card owners have been complaining for quite some time about bad Vista
drivers.
You might go to their web site and check them out.
Also, (and I hate to say this), your video card (6150), is marginal at
best especially for graphics work.
If I were you I'd stop running as Administrator, log on as a user and
disable UAC (start/run/msconfig/tools/disable UAC/launch then reboot.

Frank,
Thanks for the tip, but been there done that. It was one of the first
things I did. I still get security messages. Not as often, but they are
still there and the shields are still on my icons. It is random now. One
time a message will come up and the next time it won't. Like it can't make
up it's mind or something. Could it be the OS is a woman? Just kidding.
We women are quite proficient at making up our minds...and those of our
husbands. :)

To get rid of the message, go to Control panel - Security Center.. left
side, click on Change the way that Security Center alerts me..

For intense graphics stuff, you need a good card, which means buying a top
flight laptop.. the nVidia 6150 is not bad for integrated graphics, as Frank
has made you aware, but it is nowhere near cutting edge..

Thanks, Mike...and Frank.

I understand that the graphic card is probably not the best for what I am
doing, but I am stuck with it at this point since it is in the laptop and
probably part of the motherboard. However, it shouldn't be locking up by
just running a screen saver should it? I have to Ctrl+Alt+Del to get things
going again. It randomly goes black and then comes back up, but not always.
Several times it has gone completely black and I have had to power down and
back up to get it going again. That is not normal. I run Corel Draw 12, a
strong program, but shouldn't cause that to happen. I don't usually keep
multiple programs open at the same time either, maybe my mail and Corel or
whatever I am working on.
I ran it in XP Home all the time with an ATI Mobility Radeon 9000/9100 IGP
and never had a single problem.
I have updated the GeForce drivers, but it hasn't seemed to make any
difference.

You might try knocking down the appearance to Vista Basic or even
Classic to use fewer GPU resources.
And you might upgrade Corel to X3 SP2 which is the only one that is
certified to run on Vista.

Frank,
I am running in classic view since day 1. I will check on the Corel. They
should have updates soon.
Thanks!
