When is Windows Vista actually going to work?

I just bought a computer with Vista on it. IT SUCKS!!!!! Nothing works with
this system. We bought the computer to play games on, no games are
compatible with this system. When is somebody going to do something to fix
this? I talked to HP< Microsoft, and Geek Squad, and they walked me through
how to downgrade to XP, guess what my computer is not compatible with XP, so
my whole system crashed. So much for professionals. I just want a system
that works.

When is Vista going to work? In my experience, about 45 minutes after
I started installing it.

Probably SP2 - I would expect SP1 to be marginal. To my knowledge, MS has
never produced anything that worked out of the box.

What I would like to know, Kristen, how you came to the conclusion that "my
computer is not compatible with XP", but IS with Vista? If Vista will run on it
(albeit not as well as you apparently want it to), there is absolutely NO REASON
why XP won't also run on it, and very well.

By the way, I know of at least two games which CAN be played, and played well,
on a Vista machine:
1) Halo: Combat Evolved (PC).
2) World of Warcraft (PC).

Both are great games. Try them..
World of Warcraft is an EXCELLENT MMORG (Massively-Multiplayer Online
Role-Playing Game), while Halo: Combat Evolved is an excellent first-person
shooter (or it may be played via the local network or via a server)
I know this by PERSONAL experience, not by reading someone's comment
somewhere.

However, there are a few things you need to know:
1) I have 2 gig of system RAM.
2) My CPU is an Intel Core2 Duo.
3) I know how to download the necessary XP or Vista drivers for the devices in
my machine.

Perhaps you should look into finding XP drivers for your machine's various
parts, such as Video card, CPU, Motherboard, drive controller, Sound card, and
network controller card (or modem driver), if you are absolutely set on
returning to XP. This is because most of those types of drivers for Vista are
NOT compatible with XP, nor are most XP drivers compatible with Vista.

Did you purchase your computer with Vista pre-installed by HP? IF so, Vista
drivers were installed, not XP drivers. Which means you must replace them with
XP drivers. This has absolutely nothing to do with XP being compatible (or not)
with your machine, since it is entirely a matter which can only be fixed by
installing the correct software drivers from the manufacturers of your various
hardware devices.

HP probably has the needed XP drivers on its Support website.

Kirsten, it seems your frustrated and I can't blame you. Buying something
and not getting the results you want is ultimately frustrating!

What games are you trying to play? I'm very lucky that all of mine work (of
course, I have also had a very good Vista experience on the 4 machines in my
house). There is a games forum (microsoft.public.windows.vista.games) and
there's some good folks there, perhaps you could give them a try?

As for the revert to XP, it appears you got bad advice. Any machine capable
of installing and running Vista will run XP.

As for all the flamers and battlebots responding to this post, consider
these possibilities:

1) Kristen is a legitimate consumer that is frustrated. Flaming her with
"it's not MS responsibility" won't help her (or enamor her to Vista,
Microsoft, or other users). Dousing the fire with fuel and recommendations
to move to Linux or DOS (even joking) will not help her (it will most likely
frustrate her that she's the butt of your little inside joke). If she's
frustrated, let her vent and try to help.

2) Kristen is a troll trying to drum up discontent for Vista. If this is
the case well, um, don't feed the trolls.

There are many things about this forum that are attractive to new Vista
users. The level of expertise is solid. The willingness of some to help is
very encouraging. Let's not turn it into a flame-pit or Ford vs. Chevy
board.

Ford VS Chevy?? What's it matter...even if one sucks more or less than the
other, they both still suck. =)

for the manager, and explain the error be sure to write it down for them
to see.

Apparently the original poster appears to have plenty though.

Well, considering that Microsoft does not design its software for the few
exceptions, but for general use by MANY users, I don't doubt this one person
having problems with her own "special" games

The fact is, ALL OSes eventually grandfather out some software, which is why
third-party manufacturers issue updates to their previous versions. IF they
care about their customers, they will issue updates for their customers
products. This is NOT Microsoft's responsibility, as any reasonable person
would know.

When Microsoft was designing and writing the code for Vista, they had to set
certain limits as to which software and hardware they could, would, or would
not support. This is certainly not unusual in the software manufacturing field.

As it is, Microsoft DID do an excellent job of making its software as backward
compatible as possible with the great majority of third-party software and
hardware products..

I really don't understand why so many people are having problems with some of
their older games, unless it is simply that they are unusually old, such as DOS
games, early Windows games, and pre-XP games. The pre-XP Windows architecture
is simply not compatible with Vista. IN fact, ANY software which is not 100%
compatible with Windows programming constructs is simply NOT going to work very
well, or at all.

If the game manufacturers refuse to support their own customers, their customers
have no other recourse than to purchase games and other software which does.

This is a fact of reality, and nothing is going to change it. Bitch and moan
all one wants, it's still a fact of reality. So face reality, and stop trying
to blame Microsoft for every little failure your software is having.

Don't like this? Well, go to a platform which WILL support your games and
software. Stay with XP or 98, if that is what you want to do. Perhaps it
will move Microsoft to make changes which accomodate your older software, if
enough of its customers refuse to upgrade to Vista.

Let's face it, the best way to twist Microsoft's arm is through their
pocketbook. Bitching and complaining just won't do it.

Anyway, hopefully I have't offended too many people. If I have, please forgive
me.

Gee, I get Vista to work by hitting the power button on my computer. You
claim your system is not XP compatible? What do you have, a Commodore 64??
If it is not capable of running XP, then get with the times and upgrade past
a 286.

That might just be one of the craziest statements I've read in this
newsgroup in the last, oh 4-5 mins.

Though you haven't provided a list of games or apps that you can't get to
work. So it's hard to know if you have a valid point or not. I, myself,
have a fair number of games that I tested, to include such relics such as
WarCraft 3 and Quake 2 and they work fine, even under Vista64.

But you are way out in left field if you think Microsoft is required to
make sure games that are 5 years old thatworked fine under XP, also work
fine under Vista. Why aren't the game publisher like EA, UbiSoft, THQ
required to release patches to keep the game going ? Heck, Crytek, bailed
out on Ubisoft adn FarCry and never really did fix the network client on
FarCry and that was while the game was still hot. But oyu expect Microsoft
to make sure Farcry works with Vista, even when Crytek bailed out during
XP ? (Note Far Cry does work under Vista)

Like Me Jarhead stated, I haven't found a game yet, that I couldn't get to
work under Vista, so it's a little hard for me to relate. But blaming
Microsoft, for bad drivers from nVidia, Creative labs and for games from
developers who have moved on to their next big title is just insane.

Again, if you have a game that doesn't work, come join us over in
vista.games and we'll see what we can do to help or post over at
www.vistareadygames.com and get some help there.

I have a game that will not work. It is the game Silent Hunter 3. It isn't
that the game won't work. The Starforce copyright protection software that
comes with the game cannot run in Vista or XP 64 bit.

It really pisses me off as I bought this game and can't run it anymore
because of this software protection crap.

Actually I have a second game too that won't run again because of this
starforce software that can't run in Vista 64bit.

That really pisses me off but I am not going to uninstall Vista 64 bit as I
have a dual core system with 64bit processors and I want a 64 bit OS and
vista is it for me.

Any game I see that includes that starforce software I won't buy. I could go
back to windows Xp and then the games will run but I don't want that OS
anymore.

As others have asked: what games?

Who on earth told you your PC is not compatible with XP? Sounds like total,
utter, BS.

Starforce and Secure rom are two very annoying copy protection schemes. I
have to tip my hat to gas powered games and THQ. They just released Supremem
Commander and a fair number of people couldn't play that game, because of
the Secure Rom feature and that was under XP, So in their last patch, they
removed the secure rom checks.

Not that I advocate stealing games, but because of issues with Secure Rom
and Starforce, I do make vists over to gamecopyworld.com and pull down the
no CD cracks. No the ideal solution, but an option when copy protection
stops the honest users from playing
