What's wrong with CHKDSK.EXE

Hi Everybody,
1. My nice new computer came with VISTA, a degrag program (Perfect Disk),
an anti-virus checker (PC-cillin) but no program to check the disks for
defects.
2. CHKDSK.EXE does not work whether I double click on it or run it as
administrator.
3. Is there a disk checker within VISTA which I can run.
4. I own Norton Utilities 2008 which I am allowed to put on two computers.
Does anyone know how it would work out. (I have heard bad things about
Norton.)
5. Is there a disk checker which anyone would recommend.
6. Do I even need a disk checker for Vista or is it self healing.

Hi, Phil! This is Lesley from the PSPP boards. (Small world.) I am now
running Norton Internet Security 2009; started out on my Vista machine and
it worked fine, but you want to make sure that you are up to date. It's been
working fine for me, though; I run it on both the desktop and the laptop. Is
it Norton Internet Security that you have, or Norton Antivirus The only
Norton program that I think has trouble with Vista is Norton 360, but I
could even be wrong on that one.

Hi Philip,

To run chkdsk, you need to do it from an elevated command prompt. Click
start and type CMD. Right click the start menu entry that appears and choose
'run as administrator'. Then, from the prompt, run chkdsk. If you run it
with certain parameters, such as /r or /f, it will require you to schedule
it to be done on a reboot as it needs to unlock the volume first.

Hi Max,
Thank you.
You are quite right about the disk format. On my old computer, I
constantly ran CHKDSK for years and never found a problem. That's light
years away from when I used DOS 3.3.

If we ever get down that way, Phil, we'll take you up on it! ;)

Egghead Cafe. It's how it works. The posters don't have a clue.

It's not their fault - they think they are on a web forum. Blame the forum
owners...
