What's this 4 pin CPU connector for an MSI AMD board?

Hi,
Just picked up an MSI board (KT6V-LSR) to build an Athlon system and
noticed that there appears to be a 4 pin square cpu connector on it, just
like the P4 systems.

yes, most if not all Athlon boards in the last 1-2 years
have them.
Is this a new innovation?

3 years ago it was for athlon boards.

Need it be connected for the
system to operate correctly
yes

or is it optional to connect it?

not optional

Thanks,

That's where the cpu gets power. I wouldn't suggest leaving it
unplugged.

Even if it means buying a new power supply.

Thanks Kony, Yak. I hate looking foolish when I have these 6 - 8 fourth
graders start putting together a new system next week and not certain to
tell them whether or not to plug in the cpu connector to the board. Id
prefer the system to work the first time.
