What would cause the message "Microsoft Office Access has encount.

I have office Access 2003 (11.6355.6408) SP1 and everything works fine except
for access. When I start access it comes up without any problem. But when I
open a database (Northwind for example). A window opens with the caption
"Northwind: Database (Access 2000 file format)" and almost instantly a dialog
box with Caption "Microsoft Office Access" and the message:

"Microsoft Office Access has encountered a problem and needs to close. We
are sorry for the inconvenience."

My question is: "What could cause this error?"
I am opening the database that came with the installation. And I get this
problem with any database.
Also, how can I trace what is happening so that I can figure out what is
going on.

This happening on the first use after installation.
Thanks

Probably a corrupt installation of Access. I'd suggest COMPLETELY
uninstalling Office - the corruption might be in a shared DLL file -
and reinstall.
