What services need to be enabled to run a network connection between two PCs?

Hello All,

A friend and I have just set up a small network, between a desktop and
laptop PC both running WinXP Pro SP2.

As we both tweak the hell out our PCs and have disabled alot of services, I
would like to know what services need to be enabled for us both to map each
others hardrives as network drives and for us to play LAN games.

I'd like a minimum list of network services that need to be enabled (e.g.
Workstation, Server, Windows Firewall etc) so that we don't have unessecary
services running.

Thanks in advance.

P.S.
We are using an ethernet connection with a cross over cable so nothing as
fancy as Wi-Fi.

Hi

Yeah, a lot of people fall for the Disabled Services suggestions not knowing
that the Suggestions usually supposes to make single gaming computers
faster.

The list might be long and tentative depending on you Network Settings.

Example: http://www.ezlan.net/~network/services.jpg Be careful using this
list YMMV.

As a Rule, leave the Services that you know for sure for they are doing as
is, and Change the other Disabled Services to Manual.

The system will choose what to open what its need.

Jack (MVP-Networking).

Thanks for the link Jack, that list seems very similar to the services I
have running, which is good news, just minimising services running,
currently only have 15 running when no programs are open (2 are IntelliType
and IntelliPoint and the 1 is obviously when I press Ctrl + Alt + Delete, so
I suppose 12 is very good).

Thanks alot for your time, just want things running as fast as they can and
to stop unecessary services from running (which I need to do with my dating
machine).

Thanks again.
