trying to network two home desktops please help

i'm trying to network two desktops running xp sp2, with ethernet nics, and a
direct connection using a cat 5 crossover patch cable. i have connectivity,
i.e. both comps can ping one another and i can browse the internet with the
ics client computer (they are sharing a dial-up connection), however the
comps cannot see each other when i open network places on either one and
attempt to browse the workgroup (i get an error msg saying the workgroup is
not accessible - i may not have permission to access this resource). i have
xp firewall enabled with file and printer sharing checked as an exception on
both pcs, i also have norton internet security 2003 installed on both and
added each pcs ip address to the nis trusted zone on the other one. i also
enabled shares for the hard drive partitions on both pcs. if anybody can
help, i'd appreciate it, i am pretty wet behind the ears when it comes to
networking issues. thx.

Don't have two firewalls running. If your Norton is running, turn off your
Windows Firewall in Control Panel/Security Centre. That may help.

Jason,

Check each computer for misconfigured firewalls, and for registry setting
restrictanonymous.
Misconfigured firewalls:

Registry setting restrictanonymous:

Check each computer for access permissions:

If no help yet, provide "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all" from each
computer, and we'll diagnose the problem. Read this article, and linked
articles, and follow instructions precisely:
