for some reason the ctrl + shift + vowel isn't working for me and i would
like to know the alt + 3 digit number shortcut is for a,e,i,o and u is (with
umlauts). This is quite urgently needed as i am starting german gcse
coursework.
thank you!

The default shortcut is not Ctrl+Shift+vowel, it's Ctrl+: (or
Ctrl+Shift+;) followed by the vowel without the Ctrl key.

For reference, though, the Alt+number values (which require the
leading zero) are

ä = 0228
ë = 0235
ï = 0239
ö = 0246
ü = 0252

These and the other shortcuts are available in the Insert > Symbol
dialog. See http://www.word.mvps.org/FAQs/General/InsertSpecChars.htm
for more.
