Shortcut for highlight

Is there any shortcut for highlighting in MS Word? Some thing the same as
Ctrl+u then the text is underlined.

If not, is there a way to add shortcut for this function?

There isn't a shortcut by default, but you can add one. The
instructions at
http://www.word.mvps.org/FAQs/Customization/AsgnCmdOrMacroToHotkey.htm
will tell you how to add a shortcut in general. The Highlight command
you want is in the All Commands category.
