What is the proper way to stop the indexing servce ?

Hello, I'm wondering what the proper way is,
I've seen recommendations on disabling the service and uninstalling
from Add/Remove programs (Windows components).

Today I looked in control panel/Admin tools/computer mgmt/
services and applications/ (right click) indexing service/
All tasks/ Tune performance/ Never used.

When I did this, it asked me if I really wanted to do it,
and when I confirmed it said it was now disabled.

A few minutes later, I checked this setting, and it had reset
itself to "used often" - so I don't know what is going on there.

Secondly, after the indexing is stopped, (for good hopefully)
is there any cleanup to be done?
Catalog files ?

the proper way is
to turn it off via
admin tools, services.

in regards to the
indexes, i wouldn't
delete them but if
you did, they would
be rebuilt when the
indexing service was
turned back on.

keep in mind, that
windows indexing
may not be the only
thing installed on your
pc that is indexing as
well.

however, turning off
the windows version
is a good start to figuring
out what has gained your
interest.

Disable it for every drive in your system using the option that is
available when you right-click on each drive listed in "My Computer"
and select "Properties"

Thanks for the info.
I've got a dual boot, two installs of XP PRO SP2,
on one system the service was set to "auto",
while on the other one it was "manual"

On the system where it was manual, I'm not aware of it running
recently, although I can't swear on it. I did a check on
http://www.ss64.com/ntsyntax/services.html which mentioned
the default status was manual. If that's the case, what actions cause
it to kick off ?

I don't use the Windows search tool, instead I use Agent Ransack,
perhaps that's a factor.

I tried that but, then it said it was writing some attribute to each
of the files on the partition. Wasn't sure what that was about so I
interrupted it.

Does it actually have to set a flag in each file making it exempt
from indexing? What happens when you add new files?

When you disable Indexing, it has to erase all of the index files it
made.

Be patient and let it happen.
