What is it that runs before I log on?

I use XP SP2. I have Kaspersky antivirus and Diskeeper but neither are set
to run on boot. However when I do boot my hard disk light indicates
activity for perhaps 10 minutes after starting windows but not logging on.

Is this indicating that XP is running its Defrag program even although I
have Diskeeper installed or could it be somethnig else?

Hello Beemer,

Suggest you download autoruns, a startup program editor, and see what
is running at startup (better that msconfig):

There are lots and lots of things for Windows to do after it displays the
Login screen. Defrag is not
one of those things.

It could be many things but I'd start with disabling the Indexing service.
Right click your hard drive icon(s) and select Properties. Then uncheck the
box that refers to Indexing for faster file searching and click Apply.
Another box will pop open. Ensure you set it to disable indexing on all
folders and subfolders and click OK. It will run for a bit and may stop
telling you that it can't disable indexing on a specific file. Click Ignore
and let it finish.
