what if porn popups cover the entire screen?

R

Richard Fangnail

I tried doing logo+M to display the taskbar but after a while it kept
going back to the popups. So I did ctrl-alt-delete and stopped the ie
process. What else could you do? The popups had no minimize or close
buttons.

Hi,
Try Alt + F4 to close the top window.

Also:
Consider the Recommended Minimal Security Settings at
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm
Activate the pop-up blocker that's included with IE6 SP2, or the pop-up
blocker that's a part of the Google toolbar, MSN toolbar and Yahoo toolbar.

Hope this helps,
Don

I wouldn't know. I don't get unwanted popups, porn or any other kind.

So what else could you do? Stop the popups, before they pop up.

Use a popup blocker like installing the free Google Toolbar. Ensure you are
protected from spyware by using a legitimate cleaner regularly.

You could have malware on the PC causing those Pop-Ups !

Use Ad-aware SE v1.06 and SpyBot Search and Destroy v1.4 and scan the system.

It could also be a Browser Helper Object and you could use BHODemon v2.x to remove unknown
BHOs.

If it is a Trojan or virus...

Dump the contents of the IE Temporary Internet Folder cache (TIF)
Start --> Settings --> Control Panel --> Internet Options --> Delete Files

Dump the contents of the Mozilla FireFox Cache { if you use FireFox }
Tools --> Options --> Privacy --> Cache --> Clear

Download MULTI_AV.EXE from the URL --
http://www.ik-cs.com/programs/virtools/Multi_AV.exe

It is a self-extracting ZIP file that contains the Kixtart Script Interpreter {
http://kixtart.org Kixtart is CareWare } two batch files, four Kixtart scripts, one Link
(.LNK) file, this PDF instruction file and two utilities; UNZIP.EXE and WGET.EXE. It will
simplify the process of using up to 3 different Anti Virus Command Line Scanners to remove
viruses and various other malware.

C:\AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT -- { or Double-click on 'Start Menu' in C:\AV-CLS}
This will bring up the initial menu of choices and should be executed in Normal Mode. This
way all the components can be downloaded from each AV vendor’s web site.
On Win9x/ME the choices are; Trend, McAfee, Exit the menu and Reboot the PC
On NT4, Win2k, WinXP and Win2003 Server the choices are; Sophos, Trend, McAfee, Exit the
menu and Reboot the PC.

You can choose to go to each menu item and just download the needed files or you can
download the files and perform a scan in Normal Mode. Once you have downloaded the files
needed for each scanner you want to use, you should reboot the PC into Safe Mode [F8 key
during boot] and re-run the menu again and choose which scanner you want to run in Safe
Mode. It is suggested to run the scanners in both Safe Mode and Normal Mode.

When the menu is displayed hitting 'H' or 'h' will bring up a more comprehensive PDF help
file.

To use this utility, perform the following...
Execute; Multi_AV.exe { Note: You must use the default folder C:\AV-CLS }
Choose; Unzip
Choose; Close

Execute; C:\AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT
{ or Double-click on 'Start Menu' in C:\AV-CLS }

NOTE: You may have to disable your software FireWall or allow WGET.EXE and/or FTP.EXE to go
through your FireWall to allow them to download the needed AV vendor related files.

If you are in a hurry to just close that window you can also hit Alt-F4.
Chances are that window has focus and this should close it. Then follow the
other advice listed here.

Seems like the obvious solution would be to stop the pop-ups entirely,
unless, of course, you want them.

When visiting porn sites, always be careful not to download/install
their "free" viewers. You'll get more than expected, every time. To
repair the current situation, uninstall the "viewer(s)" provided and
then use Ad-Aware from www.lavasoft.de and SpyBot Search and Destroy
from www.safer-networking.org/ to clean up any residue. Both have
free versions for personal use.

You should also try using MSConfig to see if something is being
started each time you reboot.

How to Troubleshoot By Using the Msconfig Utility in Windows XP

Additionally, Look in the C:\Documents and Settings\All
Users\Start Menu\Programs\Start Up and C:\Documents and
Settings\username\Start Menu\Programs\Start Up folders, and in the
system registry, primarily in the
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run and
HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run keys.

varieties of scumware are available here:
