What happened to the sound?

WinXP Pro with SP1. Everything was normal until I uninstalled
a program and then re-installed it. The program was Pico 2000.
No matter what I did, I could not get sound. The sound card
was still configured correctly in device manager and all the sound
files were intact. In control panel, sounds and audio devices,
the place icon in taskbar was enabled. However, the little icon
that allows you to test a sound when you are picking sounds for
different events, was greyed out. I had disabled system restore,
and had forgotten to re-enable it, so I couldn't do a restore. I
uninstalled the sound card and re installed it. Still no go. I changed
the sound car into a different slot. Still no go. I replaced the sound
card altogether, still no sound.

I re-installed XP on a new hard drive ( I still have the other one intact
in the hope that I can fix this problem) and everything works fine.
So, I tried to recreate the same problem. So, I installed and then
uninstalled and then reinstalled Pico 2000. Hey presto....same problem.
No sound!!!!! This time I did a system restore and I got sounds back
again. I'd really love to know how to fix it on my other hard drive
so I can have my system back to normal with all my favourites and
other settings etc. Anyone know how to help?

P.S The sounds fix reg file on Kelly's site didn't fix it.

They wont acknowledge a problem with their software. I thought
there may be a known fix in XP for this sort of thing. Obviously
there is some peculiar registry change during the uninstallation
process but.......

Next time run an independent registry saver/restorer in advance of any
software install.
