What happened to Direct Cable conneciton in XP?

B

Bible John

It was there in 95 and 98 but is missing in XP.

I have managed to connect my Jornada to this XP machine as a guest. But in
order to do so I had to install Active Sync. Imagine I want to connect my
PDA to another XP machine as a guest but that PC lacks Active Sync. Before
there was a app called Direct Cable connection (which XP seems to lack or at
least is not installed by default).

If I were in such a situation how would I get the files from PPC to PC?
Imagine the following are lacking on the PC.

Bluetooth
SD/CF adaptor
Wifi or access to the Internet
Ethernet cables

So the only way to transfer files from point a to point B is via USB/Serial

Pocket PC devices don't support a direct cable connection, so you must use
ActiveSync or another wireless technology (both Bluetooth and infrared are
supported) to move files to or from a PPC to a PC when ActiveSync is not
available.

Hi Richard and thanks for the reply!

Richard I am using a Jornada 720 which with dialup networking seems to
support the creating of a direct connection.

http://www.hpcfactor.com/reviews/hardware/hp/jornada720/

Richard the desktop PC lacks both a IR and Bluetooth adaptor so that idea is
moot.

I guess the best way to do this is installing AS. So if I want my Jornada
to talk with PC's on the field I will have to carry around the cable and the
Active Sync CD.

Yes, that's exactly correct. PPC devices only have a limited number of ways
to connect and you must use one of them to do so.
