As the title says really. What do you lot do for a living.

At the moment I'm a machine driver at a scrap yard, drive various heavy plant (scrap handlers, bailer/shear, bucket loader). I also do quite a lot of burning/gassing/cutting with oxy propane which I quite enjoy to be honest (sad I know). On the odd occasion I do a bit of demolition as I did it for 5/6 years prior to the scrap yard.

I hate the hours, but to be honest probably the best job I've ever had. I'm not one for being indoors, have to be outside for at least 8 hours of the day :p

I've driven a little 1.5t excavator and i found it quite therapeutic, i could do that for hours. oh and there is nothing sad about enjoying chopping stuff up with a gas axe, my dad has a plasma cutter and i find myself chopping stuff up just because i can

I am soon to be one of the many unemployed uni graduates in this country. Have an interview with a rather large car manufacturer to do R&D and one doing emissions testing/ development so fingers crossed i'll get one of them

Oh dear oh dear oh dear.... my little quip seems to have sparked a whole nest of jolly japes, why, feckit even went back and deleted his serious reply so he could add what he perceived as a funnee.

Alright then, our reef asked a serious question and imo it's as good a topic as any so as I started the not entirely truthful replies, I'll also start the serious replies.

Right now my official job description is 'Audio Engineer'.

I work on loudspeaker networks mostly within schools that broadcast microphone announcements, class change 'pips' and in some schools the fire alarm as well. These are 100 volt line loudspeaker networks, not the low impedance systems you use at home or as seen in music hall and club public address systems, though I do occasionally work on those as well.

The audio signal is mixed via a transformer with 100 volts AC and this carrier enables the audio signal to be sent long distances without degradation although this method won't carry low bass. The 100 volts is taken off via a transformer at each loudspeaker enclosure.

This system is also used in large buildings other than schools, such as IKEA, Asdas, Tesco et al.

I usually install extra loudspeakers, upgrade or replace the amplifier rack or fault find when the kids wreck part of the system or builders stick their drill through the cable. I also do stand alone audio systems, typically in a school hall to take microphone/CD/iPod signals.

I also do Portable Appliance Testing (PAT); Door Entry Systems and CCTV. Have also had fabricated and then fitted some window security grills and some fencing. Basically if I think I can do it and can find a customer for it, I'll do it.

Have also earnt a few bob from doing discos since 1971, still do it.

In the past I have been, with varying degrees of success:

A sales ledger clerk.
A cub reporter.
A court reporter.
Reporter/Photographer
Drug Addict
Sub editor
Interviewer/salesman
Surveyor's Assistant
Driver
Cake salesman
Driver
Kitchen Porter
Breakfast & Veg Chef
Barman
Driver
Shop Salesman
Shop relief manager
Deputy Manager Hi Fi Shop
Industrial radiographer
Driver
Student for One Year
Electronic technician

(probably missed a few there, lol)

Which brings me to where I am now, self employed in a profession that mostly involves running lots of cable.

A chequered career, but an interesting one.

The job I enjoyed most and which paid best was as an Industrial Radiographer, I still have a qualification from the British Gas Engineering Research Station for that one.

So what do you do - seriously? And if you're retired - what did you do?

I work on Privately owned yachts in the 30m to 100m range, mostly commissioned for charter worldwide. The company builds yacht monitoring software that polls home made PLC TCP/IP gateways. These gateways poll sensors using modbus and a variety of communication methods, usually over RS485.

We also build:
AV systems of theatre quality using Savant systems and various other manufacturers. These systems are typically used to control AV outputs (DVD, Blue Ray, satellite(3 different worldwide zones), digital media, lighting and shade controls) to inputs of TV, PC via IPad and IPod units.

Electrical switch panels for switching of shore to generator power and monitoring of each stage in between.

Helm mimic panels connected to PLC controllers connected to real world devices. You push a button indicated "Horn: Underway" and the system automatically blasts the horn for a programmed length of time. In this case, it is a prolonged blast of about 6s.

Security and access control systems: Cameras and server, door entry pads (both button and card or key FOB), door securing systems.

I am the IT Admin for the company as well. This entails all of the servers, clients, printers, network cabling, managed/unmanaged switches (cisco, netgear and WAP), remote offices, DB systems for company software, and basically anything that connects to a computer. I have my hands on it all.

As Floppy did, I have performed the past duties in various job positions:

Trolley boy
Beach Rental attendant
Beach park maintenance
Vehicle mechanic
Car audio installation
Home AV installation
Lawn and Garden technician
Sprinkler Tech
Dock attendant
Dockmaster
Yacht crew & Captain- 55ft to 90ft
Entertainer
HVAC Tech
Electrical Engineering
Custom Electronics Installer (yachts) - Satellite TV, Navigation systems, Communication systems(VHF and SSB), audio systems
Bar consumer
Bug screen enclosure engineer and installer
IT Admin for the grey market gaming industry
Driver

I'm 32. As Flop did, I spent a year in a technical college. Was supposed to work toward a Computer Science Associates degree. Second semester, I got bored with programming and AS400. I didn't care about programming at the time. Now, meh. I hate programming, but wish I had done some of it so I have a better handle on it. I have pretty good logic that allows me to understand just about anything, which is as good if not better than programming itself.

Started computer tech @17, moved to boats, moved states and back to computers ( i forgot to mention i was an OTP support technician for Compaq Computer Corp 2000-2003. half of which was spent in upper level research department that took live transfers from floor technicians and worked issues to finish. AMA). Dot com burst in 2000-something, went to boats. Boat crew til 06, then odd jobs. Now, back to IT Admin at a Super Yacht systems monitoring company. I can track a yacht, anywhere in the world, from anywhere in the world.
