What causes the Word dictionary to disappear?

D

Diane R.

I'm not sure how to say this. I've asked this question before but did not
get an answer. I click on the spell check icon and the message comes up that
spell check is finished checking the document. But when I look through the
document, or am making more changes, I discover a misspelled work (such as
signifiant). I went into Tools/Options/Spelling & Grammar/Custom
Dictionaries. There is a Custom Dictionary there with it listed as the
default - I did not create it because I haven't taught myself how to do that
yet. I unchecked it but the spell check still did not find the mistake. Did
the Word dictionary get misplaced somehow or turned off? How do I get to
where it's located to fix it? Will that have to be done by the IT Department?

Thanks.

Hi Diane,
Try going into Tools, Options, spelling & Grammar and click "Recheck
Document". You may have ignored some spelling error in the past.

Select the text (CTRL+A) then tools > language > set language > set a
language for which the spelling dictionary is installed eg US English or UK
English and uncheck both check boxes.

Check tools > options > save > prompt to save normal template.

Format > styles & formatting > Normal style Right click and select 'modify'
Format > modify > language. Ensure the same language settings are applied.>
OK > Check the box 'Add to template'.

When you exit Word you will get a prompt about saving normal.dot. Agree to
save it.

Word will have created the custom.dic file. This stores your personal
spelling choices when you add something to the dictionary. It is an editable
text file.
