what are the folders: vti_cnf, _vti_pvt, _private

Can anyone tell me what are the folders:
vti_cnf, _vti_pvt, _private

I guess FrontPage makes these. I am working on a web on 2 computers (laptop
and desktop). When I change files on one computer, I copy the changed ones
to the other. Does it matter if these folders are not synchronized on the 2
computers?

thanks for any help,

Huck

The are the meta folders containing your meta files managing the FP web site and pages
You should not be copying any FP _vt folders Unless you are working only on disc based webs
- yes you must keep the _vt* folder in sync or you will corrupt your web
The best way to sync them is publish (to an online web location and back down to other machine)

Thanks for the answer.
Why would it be better to publish to an online web and then download to the
another computer, rather than just copy the files from one computer to the
other (or onto a shared disk)? Also, what if I am not using FrontPage to
publish to the web, but instead using a program like ftpexplorer?

if all the html files are identical on both computers, but the _vt files are
different, can you give an example of how it would corrupt the web?

thanks,

Huck

Another question:
I gather that FrontPage uses these folders to store information about the
web. If you have a bunch of html files created outside FrontPage and then
start FrontPage, select the folder with the files, and click Open Web,
FrontPage will make it into a web, presumably creating the _vt folders. Is
there a way to have it update or redo the _vt folders?

thanks,

Huck
