WGA False-Positive - a legally purchased copy reports that it's not genuine

S

Stefan

Using Windows Vista for 2 years in beta and 3 months of using the RTM I
never had this problem before. I have a legally purchased Windows Vista
Ultimate license and until today it worked; now, the system reports that
"this copy of Windows is not genuine".
I have used this system since February, with no glitch, when I installed it
it activated.
However Aero, ReadyBoost and other features that should have been
deactivated work seamlessly. When I go into Control Panel>System it says:
Windows is activated.
The system is up-to-date with Automatic Updates, permanently connected to
the net(broadband connection;T1 LAN), has AVG and Commodo Firewall.
This system is very important as it stores sensitive corporate information
as well as family photographs, videos and iTunes music library.
I have posted a screenshot of this problem on Flickr:
http://flickr.com/photos/neasteflorin/513358043/
I can provide more information, if needed.
Should this issue produce loss of data, damage to the hardware equipment
should I consider contacting my legal advisor?
I've sent an email to Microsoft about this issue via the contact form on
their website. Is there anything I can do?Is any Microsoft staff reading
this newsgroup?

Have you recently updated hardware or device drivers? If so, telephone
activation may take care of it.

Ah, the joys of the Windows Genuine Advantage program. Once again,
here's proof that WGA only inconveniences paying customers and does
nothing to stop piracy. This anti piracy crap is the best thing that
ever happened to Open Source Community.

Stephan,

You'll have to phone activate and grovel to MS so that they let you use
what you've paid for.

You recently installed an update for your SATA drivers, right. That will
cause this.

"..should I consider contacting my legal advisor?"

sweet ! YES ! call your $400/hour attorney, and start legal proceedings
against one of the largest corporations in the world, instead of making a 5
min free phone call to fix the problem. God Bless America !

Well, now you're really screwed because the photo you posted of the
problem has your Product Key number clearly displayed. Now all the
pirates can use it to install Vista at their pleasure. If I were you,
not only would I activate by phone, I would ask for a new Product Key
number, although you may have to pay for it.

Ah, the joys of being MS' b*tch.

His Product Key is clearly displayed on the photo he posted so his
problems are just beginning, whether he asks politely or not.

Course the fact that one has to ask politely to use something one paid
for doesn't bother you says it all: You've been brainwashed to accept it
as normal.

I was accepting it as normal when I had to type in an install key in Windows
98. Their product - their rules.

You've been brainwashed since way back then? I hope you recover soon.
What you can or cannot do with a product is regulated and MS has never
had the balls to take anyone to court for breaching their unconscionable
EULAs so, in effect, you are accepting their rules even if they are
unconscionable and therefore unenforceable and not legal.

And, by the way, they are not selling a product but a license to use a
product that you will never, ever, own. The fact that retailers
participate in this bait and switch scam by advertising "software" for
sale doesn't make it any clearer to the average consumer. Ergo,
unconscionable.

Alias

P.S. Windows 98 didn't have any anti piracy programs like WPA, WGA,
WGA/N or SPP and MS couldn't send your computer into "reduced
functionality" with 98 so your example is useless.

Just because someone writes that it happened here doesn't make it proof.
Hell you could have used another alias and posted it.

The fact that he was so stupid as to post his key on the internet doesn't
make him a MS bitch...stupid maybe but a MS bitch?

You don't know what you're talking about (again!).
The product ID and the product key are two different things.

Judging by the Dock with all it's Mac icon in the picture you posted
it looks like you're running Vista under Mac OS X... perhaps using
Parallels?

Have you run it this way since you installed and activated Vista or
did you avtivate it after booting it natively and are now trying to
tun it under Mac OS X?
