webcam/dvcam

I am new to instant messaging. Recently installed MSN Messenger 6.2 ( is this the right forum to discuss this facility?) I want to use my Sony DCR-PC£E DV camera as a webcam with this instant messenger. It is connected to my PC via a firewire card and functions perfectly for video editing using Studio 8 and similar video editing/viewing applications. Within the tools menu of MSN messender the Audio/Video setup Wizard allows the Sony device to be set up without any hint of difficulty but the next option on the tools menu Web Camera settings does not find a webcam connected. Likewise when attemting to send my webcam image to a Contact I only get a series of error messages. Can anyone tell me what I have missed?

Greetings Skilly,

There are actually two different video functions within MSN Messenger 6.x. The first, the
"Webcam" function, which is tested by the "Web Camera Settings" dialog, basically supports
actual "Webcam"s only. It does not support DV/firewire cameras, digital cameras, or video
card inputs. The second, the "Video Conference" function is tested by the Audio/Video Tuning
Wizard, supports most devices including DV cameras and video card inputs and uses the same
functionality as Windows Messenger does.

As such, to use a DV camera, you'll need to open up a conversation window, click the
Actions menu, and then use the 'Start Video Conference' option.

There are a few drivers that you can use to use the built-in MSN Messenger "Webcam" function
with firewire camera. For example.
