Web site optimisation in search engines

I am a UK web-designer - and I have just completed a
client's website. I now need to have this website ranked
into the major search engines (Google, Yahoo, AltaVista
etc...) but I am lacking the knowledge on how to do this.

Although I was previously told to use dmoz, I have been
speaking to some of my friends (who are not very helpful)
regarding the search engine promotion and optimisation
companies who speacialise in promoting your site to the
major engines within 72 hours etc... These companies take
a fee (initial payment and a small amount per month) to
make sure your site is regularly refreshed in the search
engines. If you look at www.iomart.com and
http://www.rapidrank.com/ they specialise in search engine
promotion - before subscribing - there may be other
companies out there who do a better job and maybe offer a
better service.

There may be cowboy companies out there who claim to have
your website listed in the top 5 results in a search
engine search - but I wish to know from other people what
sort of companies they use and whether it works for them.

Your help and advice will be most appreciated.

THanks in advance.

Best advice I have seen is to submit to search engines individually,
including DMOZ which apparently has a 2 or 3 month backlog.

As far as "cowboys" and search engine submittal specialists go, consider
this:
I have NEVER submitted my site, www.rxs-enterprises.com/ , to any search
engine
The site is listed at no. 1 on Alta Vista, and no. 6 on Google, if you
search for "Country Code Decoder", including the quotes. Leave out the
quotes and it is not in the top 1000 on Google (never looked on Alta Vista).

OK - I will submit to them individually - but any GOOD
optimisation companies in the UK who are good at what they
say (and do) and do not charge an arm and a leg?

These companies will be taking your money for nothing.
Keywords and search engine optimization are not easy
tasks. Also, you need to make sure you are not re-
submitting to the search engine too often or they will
delete your site from there database.

You shouldn't use automated software to submit to the most important
search engines as, imho, they don't do the job properly. Many search
engines "add url" pages ask different questions and only manual
submission can ensure that the work is done properly. The handful of
important search engines which you submit to by hand will account for
the vast majority of your traffic.

Yes, it is difficult to get onto dmoz these days but do submit and
persevere. Yahoo now charges for submission of a business website.

No one can guarantee to have you listed on page one of a search engine
unless, of course, your main keywords were so obscure that they would
automatically come first!

Unless your website information is searched for by professional
researchers (people in academia, journalism etc) you will, imho, do
better to optimise for individual keywords rather than phrases in
inverted commas.

Have you checked replies to your previous post (5th January) about
this subject? The thread is here:

Without quotes, Country Code Decoder would find all pages containing one or
more of the words Country or Code or Decoder in any order.
With the quotes, the results would show only those pages with the exact
phrase Country Code Decoder , which narrows the search considerably.
