I want to submit my website www.maslenmotors.com to all
the major search engines.

Some companies offer to do this for around £400+++ per
annum. Do you think this is a good deal - or is this a
scam??

Please can someone advise me of good websites for search
engine optimsation and high rankings.

Thanks,

skc

Submit it yourself to Google.
http://www.google.com/webmasters/
and dmoz
http://www.dmoz.org/

Other search engines have similar features.

If it gets picked up by dmoz it will "normally"
be picked up by them all.

Why do these companies charge £400+++ per annum??

Furthermore, do I have to keep submitting to dmoz every
month??

Thanks.

Because some people will pay it. I personally
don't think it's worth it.

"Normally" once dmoz picks up your site,
if the site remains active it will stay registered with dmoz.

The charge because they may offer other services, such as checking to see if
your site is ready to be indexed (META tags correct and so forth) and they
submit to a wider variety of sites.

As for your second question, no, once you submit to a search engine you
don't have to re-submit.

The way things are at DMOZ these days, don't count on anything actually
happening with your submission for several months. And do NOT re-submit
because in their system that bumps you down to the bottom of the waiting
list.

Once you have submitted to any of the other search engines, be patient -
wait a while before resubmitting - submitting repeatedly will annoy
people and that's a bad idea when you want them to index you.

I'd stay away from those automated submission programs in 99% of cases -
do it manually. Some of them will submit you to FFA sites and link farms
that will damage you rather than help you.

DEFINITELY NOT! see my message about DMOZ above.

No automated submission system is a substitute for monthly
hand-submission to the most important search engines. Save your time
& money. You will find this hand-full of important search engines
will account for the vast majority of your traffic. You have designed
your website without frames, so are on a good way to optimisation.
However, you have far too many words in your title tag – keep this to
8 words max. I also advise leaving your company name out of the title
tag and using it for company branding in your description tag – which
you have done. Google, the most important search engine, will
currently rank your site according to what users search for, which is
then cross-checked with wording in your title tag and it's relevance
to body text on your page. A very good website for seo is

Don't hold your breath waiting for DMOZ though. They are months behind
in most categories and several don't even have editors. And if they turn
down your site, no one will actually notify you about that or tell you
why.

You do not need DMOZ to get listed, although it does help. You also do
not need to pay anyone for it.

Go to the actual sites for Yahoo, Google, Ask Jeeves, etc., etc., and
submit your site manually. Then if you have a well designed navigation
system, including a site map with a text link to that page on your home
page, and decent content on your web pages, and relevant links pointing
to your site from other web sites, be patient and you'll get there.
