Michael,

Block obnoxious ads with a compiled Hosts file. Three Hosts file sources I use:
http://www.accs-net.com/hosts/get_hosts.html
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm
(The third is included, and updated, with Spybot S&D (free) from
<http://www.spywareinfo.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=5187>.

Compile and maintain your Hosts file with:
eDexter <http://www.accs-net.com/hosts/get_hosts.html>
Hostess <http://accs-net.com/hostess/>
HostsFileReader <http://members.shaw.ca/techcd/VB_Projects/HostsFileReader.exe>

Hostess helps you merge the three files, and eliminate duplicate entries.
HostsFileReader gives you a way to toggle the compiled Hosts file with a null
file, to check for problems (sometimes a web site you want to see is in one of
the files, so you need to switch the filtering off temporarily). EDexter
provides a way to edit the Hosts file in place, to comment out blocking of
websites that YOU value, AND it intercepts each request for a blocked website
and replaces the "not found" graphic with a clean background in your browser.

All of these are free. None of them take a lot of memory or processing power.

Then be sure to disable the DNS Cache service in Windows XP (Control Panel -
Administrative Tools - Services - DNS Client - Stop then Disable).

As I browse, I see blank spaces in my browsers everywhere. Makes me happy. I
can't stop spam - but I can sure stop most of the ads. Much better bandwidth
utilisation. :))

Cheers,
Chuck
Paranoia comes from experience - and is not necessarily a bad thing.
