Want to help new user email photos

I would like to help a new user email some photos. I use ThumbsPlus, so I
am not familiar with using XP for this purpose. I checked the help file,
and it sounds simple. However, the directions say to click the photo I want
to send (under My Pictures), then click "e-mail this file" under "file and
folder taskes," then I should be able to click on "make all my pictures
smaller" (which is just what she want).

Well, I just tried it on my own computer to make sure I could show her --
and there is *no* "file and folder tasks that I can find. Instead, I have
the option to email using Yahoo -- which means that she would need a Yahoo
account, and I do not see any way there to downsize.

Help! This sounds very simple, but I must be overlooking something since I
can't find the "file and folder tasks" option under My Pictures.

We both use XP-Home Edition.

1. Make sure the XP is set to recognize the photo file to open the resize my
photo window.
Click on Start and click on Run and type the following in the textbox:
REGSVR32 SHIMGVW.DLL
and press the Enter key.
This will take a second to run.
Note that there is a space between ....32 and SHI...
2. To find File and Folder Task
Open My Computer, open the photo folder and click on one photo to select it.
Look at the menus on the left.
The top one should be Picture Tasks followed by File and Folder Tasks.
If you do not see these Tasks menus you should be seeing as list of your
drives, folders etc. To change this to Tasks, click on the yellow Folders
icon on your top bar.
Under File and Folder tasks you will see E-mail this file. Click on it and a
window will open offering to make the size smaller for e-mail. In your case,
it may be that E-mail this file, has been replaced by E-mail via Yahoo. I
don't use Yahoo, so I am not sure. If so, click on it anyway and see if the
resizing window opens. Someone who uses Yahoo may be able to help more
directly.

If this does not work out you can resize the files first and then attach
them to the e-mail message after opening the e-mail software.

To decrease the size of the file for e-mail, web publishing, etc.

Go to this site and download the free Image Resizer. Exe file in one of your
folder. Preferably, make a new folder for it if you don't already have a
folder for downloaded stuff.

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp

Once in your folder, double click on the file to install it.

Once installed, you right click on a photo file (or on a group of selected
photo files).

Click on Resize image on the opening menu.

A window will open, select the size you want.

New files will be added in your folder, same name as original file but with
the word (small) or (custom) added.

The first time you use it, you may not see Resize image on the opening menu
after you right click on a photo file or if you see it and click on it, it
may not work. If so, do the following:

Click on Run, click on Start and type the following in the textbox:

REGSVR32 SHIMGVW.DLL

and press the Enter key.

Note that there is a space between ...32 and SHI.

You should get a "success" message after pressing the Enter key.

Once you have the resized files in the folder, open your e-mail software and
after composing the message, attach the photo files you want. The following
steps are using Outlook, probably a little different using Yahoo.

Click on Insert on the top bar.

Click on Picture on the opening menu, click From file and navigate to the
folder to select the file. The file will open fully in your message window.

The other way is to Click on Insert on the top bar and then click on File on
the opening menu and then select the file. The file name will be entered as
an attachment.

Thanks for the help. As it turns out, I found that there was an easier way
through XP, but it wasn't the route described in the help files. I went to
File>Sent To, and selected "mail recipient." Then the box popped up that
enabled us to save the mail messages to a smaller format.

I'm very interested in the program where you provided a link, though,
because it seems that we could select a specific size (instead of just
"original" or "smaller," as via XP). I'm going to try it out and will
install it on my friend's computer if it works well. I already use
ThumbsPlus myself, but I was looking for some free help for her -- and the
program you referenced seems to be freeware.

Thanks again,
MaryL
