Wallpaper shifted down and right after 3rd party theme install...

I've searched these message boards and haven't found the answer I need, so
maybe I can find it here.

I recently installed a 3rd party theme. When I applied the theme the
wallpaper was shifted down and to the right. I uninstalled the theme and now
any wallpaper I apply is shifted down and to the right also. It doesn't
matter if I stretch or center the pic, it is still off center.

The items on my desktop are unlocked (using the web feature under
custumize desktop) and I am not detecting any viruses or spyware.

Also, when I right click on the desktop and go to select the wallpaper,
whatever I choose displays properly on the preview; but when I click apply or
OK it is shifted on my actual desktop.

Any help offered is greatly appreciated.

Check the controls on your monitor (typically buttons or dials on the
bottom)...could you have inadvertently shifted your desktop off center?
Try the same with the software for your video card.

Don't ask how I know about this. ;-)

Thanx for the quick reply. It's an HP laptop so there are no external
controls and there really isn't anything in the video software that adresses
this kind of situation. All of the icons are where they are supposed to be,
it's just the wallpaper.

I also just noticed that some of my icons have changed. Seems to be
mostly the JPEG icons so far. I figured out how to change them back but that
hasn't helped solve the underlying issue. :-(

Create a text file and put this in it:

REGEDIT4
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop]
"Wallpaperoriginx"=-
"Wallpaperoriginy"=-

Save it as "ResetWallpaperOffset.reg". Double-click it, then click Yes to merge it. Now log off and on (or just reboot). Your
wallpaper should be back to normal.

Thank you very much, sir. That did the trick! I am curious as to where I
can learn how to manipulate the registry. I understand that it can be a very
powerful tool but at the same time can be very destructive if one doesn't
know what they are doing. Any ideas?

Thanx again

Well, like you said, it can be both very powerful and destructive, so it depends on what you want to do. To manipulate it, you can
use a REG file, the Regedit GUI, or the command line tool reg. However, like I said, it really depends on what you want to
accomplish; since there's so much in there, it's not really the kind of place that you can just browse around, looking for things to
do.

I understand, completely. Unfortunately that's kind of what I am looking to
do, browse around. I am in no way a power user or even all that Windows
savy... I have a little bit of knowlede about how things work. A little
knowledge is a dangerous thing, yes?

I am just curious as to the capabilities of registry and how it affects
the OS's operation, what the different keys control and how to manipulate
them. I understand you can do just about anything by hacking the reg, but I
am not going to touch it unless I have something specific in mind.

I would rather not turn my computer into a door stop. ;-).

Well then do an Internet search for "registry tweaks". You should find lots of websites with registry modifications that can do all
kinds of things. The better ones will have them classified by category, and the best ones will have good descriptions. Check
Kelly's Korner for a bunch of ready to go tweaks.

Worst case scenario, you have to reinstall. As long as you make sure to back up your data, the worst you'll do is inconvenience
yourself by knocking your system out of commission for a while. Software problems are pretty much always fixable, it's hardware
problems that should keep you up at night. :)
