Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows 2003 Server
Symptoms:
W3WP.EXE is causing 100% CPU Utilization Bottleneck, causing your system to
slow down or become unresponsive. Used memory for this process appears to
skyrocket, sometimes reaching as high as 80 MB.
Other Identifying Issues:
WSUS (Windows Server Update Services) is running on your system.
(This may work with other processes that run under IIS)
Cause:
Usually Unknown.
Fix / Workaround:
- Go into the IIS (Internet Information Services) Manager and access the
Application Pool.
- Look for the Wsuspool Application Pool (or other offending Application
Pool)
- Right-Click it and go into properties.
- Click on the performance tab.
- Put a check-mark in the Enable CPU Monitoring box.
- Set the Maximum CPU Use (Percentage) box to 60% (or whatever setting best
for you).
- Set the Reset CPU Usage Numbers (in minutes) to 1 (or whatever setting
best for you).
- Set the Action performed when CPU Usage exceeds maximum CPU use to
Shutdown.
- Click OK, Close all Windows.
Special Note:
I have not noticed any consequences to doing this so far, it has been
working for about three days now.
