W32Time setting using GPO on W2k Server

Hi,

My domain Controller is a W2k Server SP4 and on my domain have W2k Server,
W2K Pro and XP SP2 machines. I configured the W32time service using GPO.
It's working fine for the W2k (all types) machines, but for XP the settting
doesn't change, it always stay as default. I had to manually change the
setting using w32tm command. Why ? I have updated the Administrative template
from XP SP2, but still doesn't work ?
Thanks

The default for a Domain Member (2000 or XP) is to synchronize time with the
Domain Controller, which is usually the desired situation, so it is not
clear why you want/need to change this.

The GPO settings for Windows XP time service are in Computer
Configuration\Administrative Templates\System\Windows Time Service. These
setttings were introduced with Windows XP, so what settings are you using
for your Windows 2000 computers?

Hi,

I updated the template from XP ones, and 2000 is using the setting from
the GPO (Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\System\Windows Time
Service), but XP doesn't. I wanted to change setting to avoid using NT5DS and
use NTP (I have Linux box on my network that need to be sync too). Right I
have a script that change time setting using w32tm, because setting are not
applied from GPO on XP machines. On my first try, I used a third party time
server on my DC. So I disable the time server on my DC and configure the
other machine with GPO. All 2000 box was working good, but all XP was not
synchronized, because setting from GPO was not applied. why ? Now I'm using
microsoft time server on on my DC.

Thanks
Simon

It is my understanding that all time synchronization in Windows 2000 and
later is done using NTP. The Linux computer should be able to synchronize
time using NTP and your Windows Domain Controller as the time source.

When the Windows Time Service is configured to use Domain Hierarchy time
synchronization, NTP is still used for time syncs. The difference is that
the client will decide which Domain Controller to get its time from rather
than specifying a particular time source.

It is perfectly useless to know the right answer to the wrong question.
