W2KProfessional in Virtual PC 4.0.2 will not start after
updates

This message is cross-posted in the
microsoft.public.win2000.upgrading and the
microsoft.public.win2000.windows_update group.

I cannot get Windows 2000 Professional to start up after
running the automated updater from the Microsoft Web Site.

First, the configuration specifics:
Hardware:
Macintosh 17" Flat Panel iMac
800MHz PowerPC G4
768MB RAM
Virtual Memory is off
MacOS 9.2.2
Ethernet built in. Link is up at 10Mbps half-duplex
Open Transport version 2.8 installed, active
AppleTalk version 61 installed, active
TCP/IP version 2.8 installed, active

Windows Environment:
Connectix Virtual PC4.0.2
Windows 2000 Professional
256MB RAM allocated
Networking enabled (Shared IP)
COM1/COM2/USB not enabled
Internet Explorer 6.0.2800.1106

Please Note: This configuration has been running quite well
before performing the updates.

The original install of Windows has been in use until IE6
was installed a couple of days ago. I mention this because
the IE6 installer indicated that it was doing some Windows
updates during the installation process. Once IE6 was
installed, there was noticeable improvement in the network
speed during authentication processes and file transfer
operations.

I then activated the Windows Updater application from the
taskbar icon. After selecting the appropriate default
choices to identify the upgrades that were applicable to a
standard Windows 2000 Professional installation, Windows
Updater downloaded and installed a substantial number of
security and bug patches. Since I had never done an update
to this installation, this did not seem unusual. There were
no error messages generated during this entire operation
and once completed, I was prompted to restart my system to
use the updated software. I complied with the prompt and
Windows proceeded to do a normal restart. The system
appears to be starting normally, first with the standard
DOS-type black screen and "Starting Windows" progress bar,
then the normal Windows splash screen including a normally
running progress bar, then the video resolution adjusts and
the normal Windows "Please Wait" dialogue box appears and
shows progress through the messages "Windows is starting
up...", "Preparing network connections..." and "Applying
computer settings...". This ends with the "Welcome to
Windows" dialogue, which prompts me to "Press
Ctrl-Alt-Delete to begin". I comply and I am prompted to
enter my username and password in the "Log On To Windows"
dialogue box. Again I comply and the system accepts my
login and displays dialogue boxes with "Loading your
personal settings.../Applying your personal settings..."
messages. This is followed by the normal "Restoring Network
Connections" dialogue, which performs it's task and
completes normally as well. This is where everything stops.
No taskbar ever appears at the bottom of the screen. No
system or program icons (My Computer, Network Neighborhood,
Recycle Bin, Internet Explorer, etc.) ever appear on the
desktop. Virtual PC indicates that there is some occasional
read/write activity on the hard drive and the network
through the icons in the application window frame. I can
bring up the Windows Security dialogue through the use of
Ctrl-Alt-Delete and shut the system down by selecting the
Shut Down button in what appears a normal shut down process
("Closing network connections..., Saving personal
settings..., Windows is shutting down...", etc.). I can
also bring up the Task Manager or use any of the other
features in the Windows Security dialogue just like normal.
I cannot get any contextual menus from the desktop by using
a right-click, so I cannot check any properties as well.

If anyone can suggest ways to correct or trouble shoot this
situation, it would be much appreciated.

You can "shut down" the guest machine, copy the Hard Drive image and create
a new computer and see whether you get the same errors.
You can also start up in safe mode and roll back the last couple of updates.

I used to have similar issues and started doing a monthly copy of the disk
image so if I had to roll back after a knackered update I could.

Also speak with the Connectix support team about this, they may have an
easier solution.
