W2k and XP Pro Group Policies

Chris Cairns

We have several Windows 2000 servers in our Domain. Most clients were
WinNT 4.0 and we had policies setup for the users including roaming
profiles. We added several XP Pro workstations and have found that if
users login to a WinNT workstation and then go to a XP workstation that they
are no longer able to do things like browse the network, print, or run
local applications. Other users who have never logged into NT4 are able to
function just fine on the XP workstations.

Is there a known conflict with policies or profiles and how can we resolve
so that all users may roam from NT 4 to XP Pro?

It is unsupported to login to NT4 and 2000/XP with the same user profile.
The profiles directories for these OSes are incompatible. You'll have to
choose one platform and run with it.

Hello Chris.

Please be aware of the information in the following article:
224012 Using User Profiles with Windows
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=224012

Please test the behaviors by creating a test user with a roaming profile,
logging it onto an NT 4.0 client, and then logging on to an XP client. Does
the issue reproduce? If not, then there may be another issue in the
environment not related to the version of Windows being used.

What errors are recorded in the event log or at the console on the XP
client?
