W2003 Styles: Modify or based on

I am not clear if there is a difference between modifying the built-in
headings or creating new styles based on the headings. I don't want to lose
the advantages of using the Heading styles, but I want them to be indented or
in a different font. It seems like the only disadvantage to modifying is that
the "loses" the default settings if saved to the template.

What am I missing

In other words, styles based on these styles will not "inherit" these
qualities. But will these styles retain the qualities if they are
modified--excepting outline level?

Thanks for the help. And Happy Thanksgiving!

Yes, you can modify the settings of the built-in heading styles; they will
keep their "magic" properties.

Indeed. If you could not modify the built-in heading styles, they'd be
pretty useless!
