Styles for Heading 1, 2, etc.

I'm now using Word 2003 for writing user manuals. (I have updated Word 2003
with the latest SP.)

I made a template several manuals ago that uses the cascading styles for
heading 1, 2, etc. based on Shauna Kelly's article. Everything has worked
well until now. The headings styles keep losing their indent settings (Number
and Text position,), which are replaced by bizarre ones in the Paragraph
formatting, such as hanging indents. (I never use them.) The headings are now
all over the row.

I've tried redoing all the headings from scratch, including resetting all
the Outline Numbered choices to the default settings. After modifying each
heading, I check Add to Template in the Modify Style box, and also say Yes
when I save the doc to save changes to template. When I close Word and open
it again and go to my doc, the headings have changed back to the bizarre
settings.

How can I clear the headings in this template, and re-do the settings, if
that's what I need to do? Any other suggestions? Thank you very much.

Indents in numbered headings must be set through the Numbering dialog, which
will override settings in the Paragraph dialog.

Thanks, Suzanne, but I did edit the heading styles in the Numbering dialog,
and they looked fine, but when I save the doc and exit, and then open it, the
heading styles revert to the bizarre heading styles. Do you know how I can
start over with new heading styles?

Thanks

Make sure that "Automatically update document styles" is not checked in the
Tools | Templates and Add-ins dialog. And of course make sure that you are
editing the styles by going into Format | Style | Modify through Heading 1
and editing all the other levels in the same dialog.
