I am having problems with my system hanging upon a shut down request. I
found an article on it in the Microsoft support site, it has a link for a
hotfix but the link is back to an index page for selection of type of
assistance/info page. Do I need to request the hotfix or what? The article
ID is 843540. I could attempt the 'workaround' but thought that a 'hotfix'
was something downloadable and now am questioning that since there is no
'download' at the link given. The workaround has you going into the
Boot.ini file... I'm smart enough to realize that it's probably NOT
someplace to be messing around. Has anyone tried the 'workaround'?

The hotfix is supplied free by MS if it is *specifically* relevent to your
problem. You have to contact MS directly, as indicated in the article.
However a shutdown problem may be a problem with software/device unloading
You could download msconfig
http://www.perfectdrivers.com/howto/msconfig.html
then disable devices/software and test

I agree with DL on this one - I think your issue lies somewhere else. Also I
highly doubt you are using the /PAE switch in your boot.ini
