When shutting down, pc starts to shut down normally, goes to black screen,
and then starts over with ssaving settings, shutting down, etc. and is taking
much longer than normal to shut down even at this point. I only see two
errors in the Events Log, and the time frame is not corresponding to the time
that I shut down my pc.

Red warning in Event Log says: "Service Control Manager"....
The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load:
SASKUTIL

For more information, see Help and Support Center at
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.
The above link does not work!

The yellow warning has to do with Windows Defender:

Windows Defender Real-Time Protection agent has detected changes. Microsoft
recommends you analyze the software that made these changes for potential
risks. You can use information about how these programs operate to choose
whether to allow them to run or remove them from your computer. Allow
changes only if you trust the program or the software publisher. Windows
Defender can't undo changes that you allow.

This link only takes me to Windows Defender Homepage of Microsoft.

I have thought about ending the process for Windows Defnder before shut
down, to see if that is the cause, but can't figure out how to do that even.

I could really use some help.... I don't have a clue what to do next and my
computer skills for troubleshooting are limited at best. Thank you.

Shutdown issues are generally caused by a program and/or process that is
refusing to exit gracefully. The program and/or process can be from malware
or can be legitimate (such as an invasive antivirus like Norton or McAfee).
If you are using a Norton or McAfee product, uninstall it and replace with
a better program such as NOD32, Kasperksy, or Avast (free). The Windows
Firewall is adequate for most people. Shutdown issues can also be caused by
old/poorly written drivers so make sure all drivers are updated. See Step
B. below for general driver directions.

A.The first step is always to make sure your computer is virus/malware free.

http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Removing_Malware

B. Drivers - The First Law of Driver Updates is "if it ain't broke, don't
fix it". Normally if everything is working you want to leave things as they
are. The exception is that heavy-duty gamers will usually want to update
their video and sound drivers to squeeze every last bit of performance out
of the hardware to get the fastest frame rates. If you're not one of those
people, you don't need to update your drivers if there are no problems you
are trying to solve.

Never get drivers from Windows Update. Get them from:

1. The device mftr.'s website; OR
2. The motherboard mftr.'s website if hardware is onboard; OR
3. The OEM's website for your specific machine if you have an OEM computer
(HP, Dell, Sony, etc.).

Read the installation instructions on the website where you get the drivers.

To find out what hardware is in your computer:

1. Read any documentation you got when you bought the computer.
2. If the computer is OEM, go to the OEM's website for your specific model
machine and look at the specs (you'll be there to get the drivers anyway)
3. Download, install and run a free system inventory program like Belarc
Advisor or System Information for Windows.

http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html - Belarc Advisor
http://www.gtopala.com/ - System Information for Windows

C. If the computer is virus/malware-free, drivers are current, and no Norton
or McAfee programs are installed, then do clean-boot troubleshooting to see
which program/process is the culprit:

How to perform a clean boot in Vista and XP -
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/331796

D. If you need more information, here is an excellent shutdown
troubleshooter:

http://www.aumha.org/win5/a/shtdwnxp.htm

Standard caveat: If troubleshooting the issue is too difficult - and there
is absolutely no shame in admitting this isn't your cup of tea - take the
machine to a computer repair shop. This will not be your local
BigComputerStore/GeekSquad type of place. Get recommendations from family,
friends, colleagues.

Malke,
Thank you for your help and your suggestions. Will take me a few 'reads' to
digest it all :) I failed to mention in my previous post that I do have KIs
(Kaspersky Internet Suite 7.0) on this pc. Also have Syblaster, Search and
Destroy, Windows Defender, and Malwarebytes. I do keep everything up to
date, but drivers... no, have never done that & have never attempted to even
search for or install updated drivers.... This part is way over my head so am
at a lose as to where to begin with that. :(
i will post back and update you once I go through everything you have
suggested for me to try. Thank you for your time.

If you haven't recently installed drivers and have Windows Update not set to
automatically download/install so you couldn't have installed drivers from
there, it's probably not drivers. So you can skip that part.

scan for viruses, and spyware and all that nasty stuff. If it still doesnt
work, try running XP in a repair install.

Still working on this :(
I found out that the red warning that refers to SASKUTIL has something to do
with Super AntiSpyware... I do not, and have never had this program on my pc
so can't imagine what that is all about.
I currently have S &D, Spyblaster, malwarebytes, 7 Windows Defender on this
pc....
I hope to have enough time today to work on all your suggestions and see
what I can do. I am printing out everything to refer back to. Thank you.

UPDATE: Just for the heck of it, i did a search on my pc for 'Super
AntiSpyware' and it came up with 7 folders for it from last year in march. I
sure don't recall downloading or installing it. It does not show up in
Add/remove Porgrams. Some of these folders are empty. Can I safely delete
them all, and could this be part of my issue? (sigh) CC

I think you should delete them if they dont show up in add / romove. It
probably is a old program that you installed, OR it is a virus / spyware that
hid the nasty stuff. Look in the folders. I suggest you delete it. If it wont
delete, check for EXEs in that folder and kill the process for the EXEs,
unless its something important like crss or smss. Those are system processes
and Ive seen many viruses disguised as those processes. Then, at last resort,
use a program called unlocker to delete the folder.

Use you anti-spyware AND anti-virus software to delete whatever it finds.

Hope this works :)
