VueScan an augmention to PhotoShop or a replacement?

Well my Epson 4870 should arrive Thursday or Friday. Can anyone fill me in on
this VueScan softgware I've been reading about here? Does itg augment
Photoshop? (I have PS6.0) if so what does it augment or does it replace PS in
certain applications?

I've been used to importing images that are being scanned directly into PS
via the import > TWAIN > settings in my PS.

Vuescan is a standalone scanning software only. It doesn't do TWAIN,
although you can set it to open the scanned image in an application (like
PS) after the scan is done and saved.
Vuescan is NOT an image editor of any kind, does NOT overlap into PS
functions.

It takes the place of EpsonScan or Silverfast and is the software that is
used to acquire the image via your scanner. Photoshop is your image
editing package, Vuescan just works with the scanner to create a data file
which can be edited in PS. Many find that third party apps. like Vuescan
and Silverfast give them better initial image data which means they are
starting with a better image "foundation" when they start editing in PS.

Many people find Vuescan scans better than the supplied programs or
plugins. The best idea is to try both the supplied scanner software and
the trial version of Vuescan from http://www.hamrick.com and see if Vuescan is worth the extra money.

Thank you for the URL. I'll check it out and see how it works after I get my
4870 up and running.

Is there any special I should focus on when setting up this scanner, or is
it pretty much idiot proof?
