TWAIN is really slow

Using both Photoshop CS and Paint Shop Pro 9, and either a Microtek
i900 or an Epson 2400 scanner, the import function using the TWAIN
driver is really slow, as in at least 3 minutes to when the scanner
TWAIN software comes up in PSP, and even longer in PS. I have
reinstalled both PS and PSP, and reinstalled the TWAIN software for
both scanners. Any guesses as to the cause? I've run diagnostics on all
the hardware, including memory.

I'd use Vuescan for everything, but I need the template control in the
Microtek Scan Wizard Pro software to scan numerous transparencies on
the i900.

Are both these devices USB? Do you have any other USB devices on the same
bus? If so disconnect them and unload the drivers with Device Manager..

Check if there's any Still Image Monitor processes running. The Epson for
example has one (don't recall the name) that sits around consuming cpu
cycles (LOTS of them) until you press the scanner button, at which point
Still Image Monitor (STIMON) starts the defined app. These can interfere
with TWAIN operation.

See Control Panel Scanners and Digicams and unregister all scanners.

You did not say the speed of your computer and what OS.

If your computer is slow, it takes some time to load TWAIN. 3 minutes seems
way too long.

If Epson has a stand alone scan utility, I would try that to see how long it
takes to load the TWAIN.

Windows XP sometimes loads a WIA driver that interferes with the
Manufacturers TWAIN, making the TWAIN very slow.
