wxp pro sp1, all windowsupdate.com updates applied

dhcp client, tcp/ip only, member of "workgroup"

connected to linksys befsx41 which is connected to motorola sb4220 cable
modem

attempting to connect via vpn to my work's intranet

i use network connections to create a new vpn, selecting option "include
windows logon domain"

i double-click the connection, enter username, password, domain name and it
says that i have successfully connected

on the connection's properties, it shows packets being sent and packets
being received ...

i look in explorer > my network places > entire network > microsoft windows
network

i do not see listed the domain i have connected to ... i refresh many times
while staying connected for many many minutes, but i never see anything

"web client network" also shows nothing

here is the connection's properties:

device name wan miniport (pptp)
device type vpn
server type ppp
transports tcp/ip
authentication ms chap v2
encryption mppe 128
compression mppc
ppp multilink framing off
server ip address xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx (these show correctly, i just don't
want to post on public newsgroup)
client ip address xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

one interesting thing is that "server ip address" is different than the one
i entered for the vpn connection

For Netwrok browsing to work over the VPN connection (a) the work network
should be using a WINS server - see if you are getting a WINS server IP
address (ipconfig /all at a CMD prompt), (b) your machine should belong to
the office domain.
See 232511 Win95/98/NT Dialup, Authentication, Browsing Using TCPIP,
IPX/SPX, or
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=232511
Even though the above KB article doesn't mention XP, the principles
discussed for NT4 browsing still apply.

I'd suggest creating a "Shortcut" for the work servers that you access most
often and put the shortcut on the desktop (or another easily accessible
place) or try to do start, run, \\<computername> and access the machines
directly - it will be faster and you'll achieve the same results.
