Volume Shadow Copy errors

I'm having this problem on more than one system. Both systems are Windows
XP Pro SP2 and we're attempting to use NTBackup on them (which is failing).
The errors are:
Event Type: Error
Event Source: Service Control Manager
Event Category: None
Event ID: 7024
Date: 10/26/2005
Time: 12:34:44 PM
User: N/A
Computer: MACHINE

Description:
The Volume Shadow Copy service terminated with service-specific error
2147500053 (0x80004015).

I'm aware that it is failing to start, the question is why it is failing to
start. The second error is probably more important than the first.
