Cannot start MS Software Shadow Copy Provider service

Hi

This is on a fully patched WinXP Pro SP2 machine.

When trying to start the "MS Software Shadow Copy Provider" service, I get
"Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request in
a timely fashion". This service depends on RPC but RPC is running just fine.

Associated to this are the following two events in the Application Event log:

Event Type: Error

When trying to register swprv.dll, I get the error 0x8000ffff.
I veryfied that swprv.dll is (binary) identical to another copy on a similar
machine where the "MS Software Shadow Copy Provider" runs just fine.

I found no information on MS MSDN and Technet and www.eventid.net that would
have helped me to resolve the issue.

I reinstalled COM+ according to

http://www.jsifaq.com/SF/Tips/Tip.aspx?id=6951

Note: One has to reinstall the Windows Security Fix KB902400 afterwards
using Microsoft Update.

I worked trough all the tips in

http://2brightsparks.com/bb/viewtopic.php?t=932

I ran MBSA 2.0.1 and there are no missing patches.

I turned three times around myself and muttered incomrehensible invocations
:)

I am at my wit's end.
TIA for all tips and help.

Hello Sir,

I think I'm in the same boat as you! I'm just wondering if you ever managed
to solve your problem and if so, how?

I've tried all the same stuff you mention below including re-installing
com+.

Thanks in advance.

Kind regards

Hello Peter

I tried to resolve the problem with Microsoft Technical Support, but I
finally ended up by completely installing Windows XP from scratch.
One tip that I didn't test at the end was to uninstall the VMWare Player
that I had on this machine. So I am afraid I am not a big help ... :-(

No problem Matthias. Thanks for the Prompt reply.

I don't think I have a vmplayer player on here, will check and try removing
it I have.

It really sucks if we have to re-install just for that, since the reason I'm
trying resolve this is so that I can take a disk image, so incase of hard
disk failure, I can be up and running in no time. It's a bit counter
productive if we have to reload windows and all applications etc, in order
to take the disk image!

Sorry you had to go through that... I'm still bravely holding out for a
solution here! Someone MUST know something!

Thanks again, and regards,

Peter

Here's what worked for me to get Shadow Copy working:

The URL is: http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=176066&page=4

The applicable text at this URL is:
Here's how to fix problem without doing windows repair.
1. Go to windows Device Manager
2. Click "view" and select "show hidden devices"
3. Scroll down to "storage volumes"
4. Click on the plus to expand.
5. Click on each one listed and right click and uninstall. (you will get
a message on some staying to reboot before it takes effect. Select no
until you do them all.)
6. Reboot.
7. Wait till windows automatically reinstalls devices. Will prompt to
reboot again.
8. Reboot.
Now it should work.
