Volume meter 'gone away', cannot get back

My volume meter has gone from my task bar and when I try to change any
setting on the speech properties dialog I get:

Could not initialize volume meter.

I cannot get the volume meter back, it seems to have dissapeared from my
system.

I am on WindowsXP Home, second update.

Any clues as to how I might be able to restore it?

I cannot use the microphone input and I suspect the two are somehow related.

Thanks

I re-loaded my audio device drivers and my microphone now works, but still
no volume control on the task bar.

Is it the volume tray icon for Windows, or is it some additional
software utility that you installed with your sound card or onboard
sound chip?

For the Windows volume tray icon, look in the Sounds applet in Control
Panel to ensure that the option to show that tray icon is enabled. If
the tray icon you want is for some 3rd party software for your sound
hardware, you'll have to check their manual or tech support on how to
display it if you cannot find an option to show it.

Hi,

The option is ticked, if I click on advanced then the larger volume control
dialog appears.

Is the tray icon for it hidden? Did you click on the chevron for the
system tray to expand it to show any hidden tray icons?
